How to learn AI agents for free is simple once you know which free tools are worth your time, so this page rates each one and gives you a verdict.
My verdict comes first, because that's what you came for.
The best free way to learn is to install Hermes Agent, run it on a free Nous Portal model and practise one small job a day.
Everything else on this page is optional, and none of it needs a card.
Here's the order I'd do it in.
- Join the free AI Money Lab and watch one free course.
- Install Hermes Agent, which is free and open source.
- Pick a free brain, and make sure it's the variant marked free.
- Add a local model in Ollama as a backup that never bills you.
- Add Herald OS or StarNet later if you want a nicer screen.
How To Learn AI Agents For Free: My Verdict Table
These scores are my own opinion, and they rate one thing only.
They rate how useful each free tool is for a beginner who wants to learn AI agents without paying.
They are not benchmark scores, and I've only scored tools I've actually used.
| Free tool | What it is | Cost today | Learning value | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hermes Agent | The open-source agent from Nous Research | Free, MIT licence | 9.5/10 | Everyone, because it's the body of the whole stack. |
| Local models in Ollama | Models that run on your own machine | Free | 8.5/10 | Unlimited practice with no meter. |
| Solar Mini 4 (free) | A hosted model from Upstage on Nous Portal | Free for a limited time | 8/10 | Fast research and basic agent tasks. |
| OpenRouter free models | Hosted models with a ":free" tag | Free with rate limits | 8/10 | A backup brain when Nous is busy. |
| MissingNo | A stealth model on Nous Portal | Free for a limited time | 7.5/10 | Skills, tool calls and quick agent work. |
| Herald OS | A free desktop that runs on Hermes | Free, MIT licence, alpha | 7.5/10 | People who don't want to live in a terminal. |
| StarNet | A pixel-art station for your agents | Free, MIT licence | 6.5/10 | Making practice fun. |
A lower score doesn't mean a tool is bad.
It means it teaches a beginner less per hour than the tools above it.

The Free Lessons, Checked
Tools are half of it, and lessons are the other half.
I haven't scored the courses, because I haven't taken the third-party ones and it wouldn't be fair to rate them.
What I've done is read each provider's own page on 13 October 2026 and record what it shows.
| Free course | Provider | Free label on the page | Format and level |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI Money Lab | Me, Julian Goldie | It's a free Skool community with 93,000+ members. | It has beginner AI courses, tools, prompts and workflows. |
| How to Build Agent OS - FREE Course! | Me, on YouTube | It's a free video, and it's embedded above. | It's a watch-along build for beginners. |
| Hermes FULL COURSE 2 HOURS | Me, on YouTube | It's a free video, and it's embedded below. | It's a two-hour walkthrough of Hermes. |
| AI Agents Course | Hugging Face | The page calls it a free course with a free certification process. | It has written units and asks for basic Python. |
| AI Agents for Beginners | Microsoft | It's an open MIT-licensed GitHub repo. | It has 18 lessons for beginners who will read code. |
| Introduction to LangGraph | LangChain Academy | The page says "Enroll for free". | It lists 55 lessons and 6 hours of video for developers. |
| Introduction to Model Context Protocol | Anthropic Academy | The registration button is labelled free. | It teaches MCP servers and clients in Python. |
Yes, the first three are mine, and I'm telling you that plainly.
They're first because they're the ones I can vouch for, and because they match the tools on this page.
The third-party four are more technical, which makes them a good second course.

Hermes Agent: 9.5/10 For Learning
Hermes Agent is the open-source agent made by Nous Research.
It handles the tools, the memory, the skills and the chat, and you plug a model into it.
The code is on GitHub at NousResearch/hermes-agent under the MIT licence.
- It installs with one official script, and then
hermes setupwalks you through a provider. - It lets you change the brain any time with
hermes model. - It supports profiles, so you can keep one profile per model.
- It has a local dashboard, which opens with
hermes dashboard. - It can write its own reusable skills with the
/learncommand.
The limit is that you start in the terminal, which puts some beginners off.
My verdict is that this is the one tool you can't skip, because every other tool here plugs into it.
Local Models In Ollama: 8.5/10 For Learning
Ollama runs open models on your own machine, and it's open source under the MIT licence.
Nothing is metered, so you can practise all day.
The Hermes docs explain the connection in plain steps.
You pull a model, run hermes model, choose "Custom endpoint", enter http://localhost:11434/v1 and skip the API key.
The limit is quality, because a small local model is much weaker than a hosted one.
You also need enough memory for the model you choose.
My verdict is that it's the safest free brain, because it can never send you a bill.
My run Hermes free forever guide shows a small local model working on an 8GB machine.
Solar Mini 4 (Free): 8/10 For Learning
Solar Mini 4 is a model from Upstage, a lab based in South Korea.
It's a mixture-of-experts model with 3 billion active parameters and 35 billion in total.
It was announced as free for two weeks on Nous Portal, and it was still priced at zero on the free variant today.
When I tested it, the word "test" came back fast, and a news research job returned a clean breakdown with sources.
It isn't frontier level, and one viewer told me it ran badly for them, so quality varies.
This is also the model with the trap I warned about.
It's listed twice, as upstage/solar-mini4:free and as a paid upstage/solar-mini4.
Today the paid one was priced at $0.05 per million input tokens and $0.20 per million output tokens.
My verdict is that it's a great practice brain, as long as you pick the free variant.
The full setup is in my Solar Mini 4 Hermes guide.

OpenRouter Free Models: 8/10 For Learning
OpenRouter lists some models with ":free" at the end of the ID.
I counted 15 through the OpenRouter API on 13 October 2026.
The list included Gemma 4 31B, Gemma 4 26B, Laguna XS 2.1, Laguna S 2.1, LFM 2.5 2.6B, Inkling and several NVIDIA Nemotron models.
You add an OpenRouter key in hermes setup and choose one of those IDs.
The limit is rate limiting, and the paid version of a model sits right next to the free one.
My verdict is that it's the best backup brain, because it gives you a second provider when the first is busy.
MissingNo: 7.5/10 For Learning
MissingNo is a stealth coding and agentic reasoning model that Nous Research announced on 10 October 2026.
Nobody has said which lab built it, and it's free for a limited time.
The Nous inference API lists it as stealth/missingno, and it was priced at zero today.
In my test the /learn command worked really well, and it was fast at calling tools.
A coding task was weaker, because a simple ping-pong style game took about five minutes and wasn't frontier level.
My verdict is that it's worth trying while it's free, and you shouldn't build anything that depends on it.
My Hermes MissingNo guide shows how to switch it on.
Herald OS: 7.5/10 For Learning
Herald OS is an agent-native operating system with Hermes Agent as the interface.
An independent developer called Luke The Dev built it, and it isn't affiliated with Nous Research.
The code is at iamlukethedev/Herald-OS under the MIT licence.
- It has a dashboard that shows your schedule and what needs attention.
- It has Spaces, which come set up as Ideas, Work and Personal.
- It has Missions, Memory, Files and Automations on top of normal Hermes chat.
- It syncs automations with the same Hermes install you already use.
The limits are real, because it's alpha, the Connections section didn't work for me and the UI was cut off slightly at the top of my screen.
Its live voice engine is also paid and opt-in, at $0.05 per minute through an OpenAI key according to its docs.
My verdict is that it's a lovely free screen for Hermes, and it's better as a week-three upgrade than a first step.
My free Hermes Agent OS guide covers the install.
StarNet: 6.5/10 For Learning
StarNet is a free, open-source agent harness that looks like a pixel-art space station.
The code is at androoAGI/starnet under the MIT licence.
You create an agent, pick a personality, choose an approval level and connect a brain.
It can run local models, or you can plug in a subscription or API key you already have.
Your agents level up as you use them, which feels like a Tamagotchi for AI agents.
I said this in my video and I'll say it again here: I think it's fun to play with, and I don't think it has a massive number of practical use cases yet.
The README says zero install, and on my machine it needed one extra install command first.
My verdict is that it's a fun way to stay motivated, and it isn't where I'd start.
Free Versus Paid: What You Actually Give Up
This is the comparison most people want before they commit to the free route.
| Question | Free stack | Paid stack |
|---|---|---|
| Can I learn the core skills? | Yes, you can learn every core skill. | Yes, and you'll usually learn them faster. |
| How good is the brain? | It's good enough for basic agent tasks. | Frontier models plan and code much better. |
| Will I hit limits? | Yes, free models get rate limited. | Limits are much higher. |
| Is there live help? | A free community answers questions. | Coaching calls give you direct answers. |
| What can go wrong? | A free promo can end without warning. | You can overspend if you don't watch usage. |
Hidden Costs To Avoid
Free only stays free if you avoid these.
- You should always pick the model variant marked free, because the paid Solar Mini 4 sits right beside it.
- You should check the free list before a long task, because free windows end.
- You should stay on the free voice engine, because live voice is billed by the minute.
- You should leave your provider balance empty while you learn, because an empty balance can't be spent.
- You should keep the laptop you have, because hosted free models don't need new hardware.
I can't confirm what Hermes Cloud hosting costs on every account, so read what Nous Portal shows before you deploy an agent there.
What Will Eventually Cost Money, And When It's Worth It
The free stack has a ceiling, and you'll know when you hit it.
A stronger model is worth paying for when a job you run every week keeps failing on a free brain.
Coaching is worth paying for when you've been stuck on the same problem for a week.
Neither is worth paying for before you've run your first few agents.
Ready To Go Further? (Paid)
This section is a paid upsell, and I'm labelling it that way on purpose.
The AI Profit Boardroom is my paid community, with 3,400+ members and four coaching calls a week.
It includes my installable Agent OS and courses on Hermes Agent, Grok Bot, DeepSeek Harness, Claude Opus 5.5 and Jev AI.
FatRank named it the #1 AI community after testing 27 communities.
