The best Hermes Agent setup in 2026 is the three-layer stack, which is Hermes Desktop with a Nous Portal model as the main brain, a local Ollama model as the fallback, a plain-text memory vault and a dashboard on top.
The free setup comes second, and the one-click beginner setup comes third.
That's the verdict, and the full scored ranking of all six setups is right below.
I've run every one of these on my own machine, so this is a tested opinion rather than a spec-sheet comparison.
The scores are my own verdict scores, and I've labelled them that way so nobody mistakes them for a lab benchmark.
Top 3 Picks At A Glance
- ๐ฅ The three-layer stack wins the best Hermes Agent setup verdict, because it's the only setup that fixes memory, control and cost together.
- ๐ฅ The free setup takes second place, because it gets you a working agent for $0.
- ๐ฅ The one-click beginner setup takes third place, because Hermes Desktop removes the terminal completely.
How I Scored Each Hermes Agent Setup
Hermes Agent is a free, open-source AI agent from Nous Research that can use tools, run commands and remember things.
It doesn't ship with a single fixed model, so every setup is a choice about five parts.
Those parts are the install, the front end, the main model, the memory and the plugins.
I scored each setup out of 10 on five criteria.
- Ease measures how quickly a normal person gets a working agent.
- Cost measures how little it takes to keep running, so a higher score means cheaper.
- Power measures how much real work the setup can take on.
- Uptime measures whether it keeps working without you.
- Privacy measures how much of your data stays on your own machine.
These are my own scores from hands-on use.
They're opinions from someone who runs Hermes every day, and they aren't measurements.

The Scores: Six Hermes Agent Setups Ranked
| Rank | Setup | Ease | Cost | Power | Uptime | Privacy | My verdict score |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Three-layer stack | 7 | 9 | 9 | 7 | 8 | 8.0 |
| 2 | Free setup | 8 | 10 | 6 | 6 | 6 | 7.2 |
| 3 | One-click beginner setup | 10 | 9 | 5 | 5 | 6 | 7.0 |
| 4 | Profile-per-model setup | 5 | 6 | 10 | 7 | 7 | 7.0 |
| 5 | Always-on server setup | 4 | 5 | 9 | 10 | 6 | 6.8 |
| 6 | Local private setup | 5 | 10 | 5 | 6 | 10 | 7.2 |
The verdict score is the plain average of the five columns.
You'll notice the local setup ties with the free setup on the average.
I still rank it sixth, because most people searching for a setup need power before they need privacy.
If privacy is your first requirement, move it to the top of your own list.
The 6 Best Hermes Agent Setups, Reviewed
1. The Three-Layer Stack โ Best Overall
This is Hermes with three layers built around it, which I describe in my 3-Layer Hermes OS guide.
The brain is a Nous Portal model with a local Ollama model as the fallback.
The cockpit is Hermes Desktop or the web dashboard you open with hermes dashboard.
The memory is a plain-text notes vault that the agent reads before it works and writes to after.
Best for: anyone who wants one setup that lasts.
Cost: the software is free, and the brain can be free.
How to get it: install Hermes, run hermes setup --portal, run hermes fallback add, create the vault, then open the dashboard.
What I like is that models become swappable parts.
A free promotion can end, and the system doesn't change.
What I don't like is that the vault needs a habit, because you have to end sessions by asking the agent to log what it did.
2. The Free Setup โ Best For $0
This is Hermes on a model that costs nothing.
Best for: testing Hermes and running easy daily jobs.
Cost: it's $0.
How to get it: run hermes model, choose Nous Portal and pick an entry marked free, or run ollama launch hermes and choose a free cloud model.
What I like is that there's no card and no commitment.
What I don't like is the limits.
Free models get rate limited at busy times, and Ollama's cloud models have token limits.
When I tested a free Portal model in my Solar Mini 4 and Hermes review, it was fast and useful, but it wasn't frontier level.
3. The One-Click Beginner Setup โ Best For Beginners
This is the Hermes Desktop package from the Hermes website.
Best for: people who have never used a terminal.
Cost: the app is free.
How to get it: download the macOS or Windows package, install it, sign in to Nous Portal and pick a model.
What I like is that the bundled package already contains the agent and its dependencies.
What I don't like is that the Mac package is Apple Silicon only.
It also stops when you close the app, so it isn't an always-on setup.
4. The Profile-Per-Model Setup โ Best For Power Users
This is one Hermes install with a separate profile for each model or job.
Best for: daily users who want the right brain for each task.
Cost: it depends on the models you add.
How to get it: run hermes profile create with a name, set that profile's model, then run it with hermes -p and the name.
What I like is the control.
I keep one profile per model, and I can run Claude on my existing subscription through the official Nous plugin.
What I don't like is the upkeep, because dozens of profiles need naming, backing up and updating.
The Claude plugin is also marked experimental, and it needs Hermes 0.21.4 or newer with a Claude Pro or Max plan.
5. The Always-On Server Setup โ Best For Business
This is Hermes on a Linux server or in Hermes Cloud, connected to your chat apps through the gateway.
Best for: teams and anyone who wants the agent reachable from a phone.
Cost: you pay for the server or for Hermes Cloud, plus your model.
How to get it: install with the official script over SSH, then run hermes gateway setup, hermes gateway install and hermes gateway start.
What I like is that it's the only setup that truly never stops.
What I don't like is the responsibility, because a server needs securing and updating.
Hermes Cloud removes that work, and when I covered it a Cloud Agent needed $10 in credits or a Nous subscription to deploy.
6. The Local Private Setup โ Best For Privacy
This is Hermes with a model running on your own computer through Ollama.
Best for: private files and anyone who wants no meter at all.
Cost: it's $0 per month, plus the hardware.
How to get it: install Ollama, pull a local model, create a profile for it and point that profile at Ollama.
What I like is that nothing leaves your machine.
What I don't like is the quality ceiling.
In my run Hermes free forever guide, a 2.6B local model handled five-step tool chains cleanly and then failed at a full web app.

Component Verdicts: Front End, Model, Memory And Plugins
A setup is only as good as its weakest part, so here's my verdict on each one.
The Front End Verdict
Hermes Desktop is the best front end for beginners.
The web dashboard from hermes dashboard is the best for managing config, keys and sessions.
It runs on port 9119 on your own machine by default.
Herald OS is a good-looking free alternative, but it's alpha software, as I explain in my Herald OS verdict.
My full front-end ranking is in the best Hermes Agent UI post.
The Model Verdict
Nous Portal is the easiest way to get a brain, because one login covers many models.
hermes model is the command that switches it.
A fallback is essential, and hermes fallback add sets one.
I rank the brains themselves in my best Hermes Agent model verdict.
The Memory Verdict
Hermes has built-in memory that is always active.
hermes memory setup adds one external provider, and the bundled options include Honcho and Mem0.
Only one external provider can be active at a time.
My verdict is that a plain notes vault beats every clever option for durability, because any agent can read plain text.
The Plugins Verdict
The official catalog had 469 entries when I ran hermes plugins browse on 7 October 2026.
That number is a trap for new users.
I'd install two to four plugins, one at a time, and I'd read each repository first.
My Hermes plugins marketplace review covers which ones I'd keep.
Why You Can Trust This Ranking
I run Hermes every day inside my own Agent OS.
My install had fifty profiles on it when I last updated, and they all survived the update.
My dashboard has saved more than a thousand Hermes sessions into my notes vault.
I've also published the guides this ranking is built on, so you can check my working.
I checked every command in this post against hermes --help on version 0.21.4.
I haven't tested every server host or every plugin, so I've kept those sections general on purpose.
How To Choose The Right Hermes Agent Setup For You
Pick the one-click beginner setup if you want an agent running today and you don't use a terminal.
Pick the free setup if your budget is zero and your jobs are simple.
Pick the three-layer stack if you want the agent to know your business and still be useful next year.
Pick the profile-per-model setup if you already use Hermes daily and you keep wishing for a different brain.
Pick the always-on server setup if a team needs to reach the agent, or if jobs must run overnight.
Pick the local private setup if your data can't leave your machine.
Most people should start at number three and grow into number one.

FAQ: Best Hermes Agent Setup
What is the best Hermes Agent setup in 2026?
The three-layer stack is my top pick.
It's Hermes Desktop or the official install script, a Nous Portal model as the main brain, a local Ollama fallback, a plain-text memory vault and a dashboard.
The scores in this post are my own verdict scores, not measured benchmarks.
Is Hermes Desktop or the terminal install better?
Hermes Desktop is better for beginners, because it installs like a normal app on macOS and Windows.
The terminal install script is better for servers and for people who like the command line.
Both run the same Hermes Agent, and you can launch the desktop app later with hermes desktop.
What is the best free Hermes Agent setup?
Install Hermes, run hermes model and pick a model marked free on Nous Portal.
Then add a second free model with hermes fallback add.
Does Hermes Agent have built-in memory?
Yes, Hermes has built-in memory files that are always active.
You can add one external memory provider at a time with hermes memory setup.
How many plugins should a Hermes Agent setup have?
I'd start with two to four.
Install one plugin at a time and test it before you add the next.
Is a local Hermes Agent setup good enough?
It's good enough for private everyday agent work such as tool calls, summaries and file jobs.
In my testing a small local model failed at building full web apps, so keep a stronger brain available for hard builds.
