Yes, the REA Reverse Engineer Anything GitHub repo is legit, and the official one is github.com/morluto/rea.
It's free and open source under the MIT licence, and the install command is npx rea-agents setup.
The one thing you must do is check that the repo owner is morluto, and you should never download a zip installer from a lookalike repo, because the real project installs through npm.
REA stands for Reverse Engineer Anything, and it's one MCP server that lets an AI agent inspect apps, websites and binaries and explain how a feature works.
I'm Julian Goldie, and I tested it with Claude on my own booking page.
This page is the reference version, so you'll get the repo facts, every feature listed, my scores for the parts I tested, and a clear note on the parts I didn't.
My Verdict On REA Reverse Engineer Anything GitHub In One Table
I only score what I actually tested or could check myself.
Anything I didn't test is marked as not scored, because a made-up number helps nobody.
| Area | My score out of 10 | Basis | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Front-end website analysis | 9 | I tested it. | Claude found my scheduling rules, my sales team and the calendar API with no back-end access. |
| Ease for a non-technical person | 8 | I tested it. | I'm not technical, and it took a couple of prompts. |
| Explanations and evidence | 8 | I tested it. | Claude built a page explaining the whole process in six steps. |
| Quality of the rebuild | 7 | I tested it. | The scheduler worked, but I'd change the UI and improve the design. |
| Setup design | 8 | I read the README. | One command shows you the changes, waits for approval and backs up your config. |
| Agent support | 8 | I read the README. | It supports five named agents plus any agent with local MCP, though I only used Claude. |
| Range of targets | 8 | I read the README. | The list is huge, but many targets need extra tools or Linux. |
| Finding the real repo | 6 | I checked search results. | Lookalike repos show up in search, so you have to check the owner. |
| Native, Android and firmware analysis | Not scored | I did not test it. | These are documented features that my video doesn't show. |
My overall rating is four out of five for the way I used it.

What REA Is And Why It Exists
REA is a set of tools your AI agent can call to look inside software.
The README's pitch is that you see a feature you like and then understand how it works, right down to the binary level.
The problem it solves is simple.
You want a feature in your own product, and you don't have the source code of the thing that inspired you.
REA lets your agent inspect the target without source code, explain how the feature works, show the evidence and build a version for your project.
Here's how the loop runs.
Your agent calls REA through MCP to inspect the target and trace the relevant code.
REA returns findings with their evidence.
Your agent then explains the behaviour or writes and tests an implementation.
How To Install REA From GitHub
You don't download anything from the GitHub page.
With Node.js and npm installed, you run this.
npx rea-agents setup
You choose your agents, review the proposed changes and approve them.
Setup adds REA's MCP server and matching workflow instructions, with backups of your existing configuration.
You restart your agent afterwards.
To update later, you run rea update for a global install or npx rea-agents@latest setup if you use npx.
I'll be transparent about my own route.
In the video I gave Claude the REA GitHub link inside my Agent OS, so my setup score above comes from reading the README rather than timing an install.

REA Features Reviewed One By One
Website analysis: 9 out of 10
The README says REA returns page structure, scripts, network observations and requested screenshots for websites.
It needs a Chrome-family browser.
This is the closest match to what I tested, and it's where REA impressed me most.
JavaScript and Electron analysis: not scored
REA returns modules, imports, source maps, routes and IPC relationships for JavaScript and Electron apps.
It needs only Node.js and npm, with no native analysis engine.
There's also a terminal command for it, which is npx -y rea-agents@latest analyze-javascript-application /absolute/path/to/app --json.
I didn't run this in the video, so I'm not scoring it.
Native binary analysis: not scored
REA returns pseudocode, assembly, strings, symbols, calls and references for native binaries.
You need Hopper, Ghidra or IDA, and you supply it yourself.
Setup can optionally install Hopper with your approval.
I didn't test any of this.
Saved network captures: not scored
REA reads HAR files and Fiddler SAZ files and returns requests, responses and exposed payloads.
I didn't test it.
.NET assemblies: not scored
REA inspects .NET assemblies statically and needs nothing extra.
I didn't test it.
Android, Flutter and firmware: not scored
Android APKs need headless JADX and a full JDK, and Android devices need adb.
Flutter apps are parsed statically from the APK.
Firmware needs Binwalk or Unblob on Linux.
I didn't test any of these.
The long tail of targets: not scored
The README also lists WASM files, EVM bytecode, SQLite databases, Go binaries, packet captures and process behaviour.
Several of these are Linux-only or need tools you supply yourself.
Evidence with every finding: 8 out of 10
The README says results include the evidence and the limitations behind each conclusion.
That's the feature that separates REA from an agent simply guessing.
Agent setup and skill: 8 out of 10
Setup supports Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, Grok Build and other agents.
The README says any agent that supports local MCP servers can use REA through manual registration.
Local analysis: not scored
The README says REA analyses targets locally.
Your agent receives the tool results, and your model provider has its own data policy.
I didn't verify this independently, so I'm reporting the README's wording.
The Test I Ran: Claude Versus My Own Booking Page
I used Claude inside my Agent OS.
I gave it the REA GitHub link and a link to the booking page for my free SEO strategy session.
My prompt was roughly, "Can you create this system like I've got right here?"
Claude had no back-end access, so everything came from the front end.
| What Claude found | Detail |
|---|---|
| Scheduling rules | It found appointments per slot, slot duration, slot interval and calendar type. |
| Team | It found who on my sales team is on the calendar. |
| API | It worked out the calendar API. |
Then it built a custom scheduler and plugged it into the workspace in my Agent OS.
| What the rebuilt scheduler does | Detail |
|---|---|
| Settings | You can adjust meeting length, start grid, office hours, bookable window, earliest booking and seats per slot. |
| Housekeeping | You can reset the settings and clear all bookings. |
| Sharing | You get a shareable booking link. |
| Booking | You pick a slot, enter details, confirm, and see who has the slot. |
| Live check | A "verify versus live" check fetches the latest available appointments from my live GoHighLevel calendar. |
Claude also built a page explaining how reverse engineering works.
The whole thing took a couple of prompts.
The full write-up is in my Reverse Engineer Anything guide.

How Reverse Engineering Works, In Six Steps
Claude explained it with two analogies, and I'm passing them on with credit.
One is tasting a sauce at a restaurant and working out the recipe.
The other is watching someone's golf swing.
These are the six steps it gave me.
| Step | What you do |
|---|---|
| 1 | You ask the question, including why it works this way and not just how. |
| 2 | You get the artefact you want to study. |
| 3 | You follow the strings, because people name things in English, such as "allow booking after". |
| 4 | You decode what you found. |
| 5 | You watch how it behaves with different settings. |
| 6 | You rebuild it and prove the rebuild works, as your own unique version. |
The REA Showcases
The project site has three case studies, and I want to describe them accurately.
| Showcase | What the case study covers |
|---|---|
| DX-Ball | A sound-pan calculation was reconstructed, and the README says it passes 3,205 original-x86 cases. |
| Notion | The Electron clipboard bridge was traced from the renderer through preload and IPC into the main process. |
| TH04 | A PC-98 DOS game's bullet-ring calculation was recovered. |
The Notion case study traces one clipboard feature.
It is not a clone of Notion, and I don't want anyone reading it that way.
Which Agents Work With REA?
I tested REA with Claude, and that's the only agent I can vouch for.
In the video I also pasted the GitHub link into Hermes, and I mentioned teaching the skill to Antigravity and Muse.
I didn't show results from those agents, so treat them as agents you can teach rather than agents I've proven.
The README's position is that any agent that supports local MCP servers can use REA.
If you're choosing tools for Hermes, my best Hermes Agent tools list and my Hermes Agent plugins marketplace guide are good next reads.
The Problems And Limits I'd Flag
The rebuilt scheduler's design needs work, and I would change the UI.
My test covered a front-end analysis of one page that I own.
Native binaries, Hopper, Ghidra, IDA, Android and firmware are all outside what I tested.
Many targets need extra tools, and several are Linux-only.
The README says REA changes quickly, so you'll need to update it often.
Commercial tools like IDA, Hopper and JEB need their own legal licences, and REA doesn't provide them.
Lookalike repos in search results are a real risk for beginners.
Is The REA GitHub Repo Safe? The Lookalike Check
The official repo is safe to use in the normal open-source sense, which means the code is public and MIT licensed.
The danger is the copycats.
Search results for REA GitHub include keyword-stuffed pages offering an "official free download" as a Windows zip.
The real project isn't a zip download, and it installs with npx rea-agents setup.
Check the owner is morluto, and leave any page that pushes an installer file at you.
Use It Responsibly
Use REA on things you own or are allowed to examine.
The README says it's for lawful research, education, interoperability, software preservation, and analysis of software you own or are authorised to examine.
Learn how the feature works and build your own original version.
Don't copy someone else's code, brand or content.
If you want a second opinion on which AI tools deserve a place in your business, you can book a free SEO strategy session, which is the same booking page I tested REA on. If you're already experienced and want to work at a higher level, have a look at the SEO Elite Circle.
Who Should Install REA?
You should install REA if you already use Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI or Grok Build and you want to understand how a feature works.
You should install it if you want to rebuild something you own as a custom app.
You should wait if you only want native binary analysis and you've never used Hopper, Ghidra or IDA, because that route needs more setup.
You should skip it if you were hoping to copy someone else's product, because that's not what it's for.
