The best Hermes Agent tools in 2026 are the terminal toolset first, web search and extract second, and cron jobs third.

That's my verdict after running Hermes daily, and the full scorecard for all 12 picks is just below.

"Tools" here means the built-in toolsets Hermes Agent can call, such as terminal, files, web, browser, vision and cron, plus the companion tools I pair with it, such as MCP servers, Telegram, Obsidian, Ollama and Tailscale.

A tool isn't a skill and it isn't a plugin, and there's a short table on that difference further down.

Every score in this post is my own opinion out of 10, based on what I've used and covered in my videos and guides.

Nothing here was measured in a lab, so use the scores as a guide to where to start.

The Verdict: The Best Hermes Agent Tools At A Glance

  • ๐Ÿฅ‡ The terminal toolset scores 9.5 out of 10, because nothing else turns Hermes into a worker as quickly.
  • ๐Ÿฅˆ Web search and extract scores 9.2 out of 10, because it works on a fresh install with no API key.
  • ๐Ÿฅ‰ Cron jobs score 9.0 out of 10, because scheduled work is where an agent starts paying for itself.

How I Scored The Hermes Agent Tools

Usefulness is how much real work the tool does in my normal week.

Ease of setup is how fast a beginner can get it running from the official docs.

Value is what you get for what it costs, so free tools with paid backends score a little lower than tools that are free end to end.

I checked the names, commands and defaults against the official Hermes docs and my own install, which is version 0.21.4.

Tools Versus Skills Versus Plugins

Hermes Agent is a free, open-source agent from Nous Research, released under the MIT licence.

It has three ways to get more capable, and they're easy to confuse.

Type Official description How to manage it
Tools The docs call them functions that extend the agent's capabilities, organised into toolsets. You manage them with hermes tools.
Skills The docs call them on-demand knowledge documents the agent can load when needed. You manage them with hermes skills.
Plugins The docs describe a system for adding custom tools, hooks and integrations without modifying core code. You manage them with hermes plugins.

So a plugin can deliver a new tool, and a skill can teach the agent when to use one.

I've scored the other two groups in my lists of the best Hermes Agent skills and the best Hermes Agent plugins.

The 12 Best Hermes Agent Tools, Reviewed One By One

1. Terminal Toolset: 9.5 Out Of 10

The terminal toolset holds two tools, terminal and process_manage.

It runs shell commands and manages background processes, and it's part of the default CLI toolset.

You pick where it runs with the terminal.backend setting, which supports local, docker, ssh, singularity, modal, daytona and vercel_sandbox.

Best for: It's best for building, installing and fixing things.

Cost: It's free locally.

The catch: An agent with a terminal can do damage, so I use the Docker backend when I want it boxed in.

2. Web Search And Extract: 9.2 Out Of 10

The web toolset holds web_search and web_extract.

Firecrawl is the default backend, and the docs list ten others, including SearXNG, Brave Search, DuckDuckGo, Exa, Tavily and Perplexity.

A fresh install with no credentials still works, because requests rotate across the free tiers of Exa, Parallel, Firecrawl and Keenable.

Best for: It's best for research and fact-checking.

Cost: It's free to start, and Firecrawl's own free tier is 500 credits a month.

The catch: Long pages are trimmed to a character budget, which is 15,000 by default, so the agent sometimes has to read the saved file for the middle.

3. Cron Jobs: 9.0 Out Of 10

The cronjob toolset exposes one tool, cronjob_manage, which creates, pauses, edits and removes scheduled jobs.

You can also run hermes cron create "every 1h" "Summarise new feed items" from the terminal.

Jobs can attach skills, deliver results to Telegram or Discord, and even run a plain script with no model at all through --no-agent.

Best for: It's best for reports and monitoring.

Cost: It's free, apart from model tokens.

The catch: A cron run can't create more cron jobs, which is a deliberate guard against runaway loops.

4. File Operations: 8.8 Out Of 10

The file toolset holds read_file, write_file, patch and search_files.

It's simple, and it's the reason Hermes can edit real projects.

Best for: It's best for coding and document work.

Cost: It's free.

The catch: It changes real files, so I keep important projects in version control.

5. Subagent Delegation: 8.7 Out Of 10

The delegation toolset holds delegate_task, which spawns isolated child agents.

The docs say up to 10 run at once by default, and only their final summaries enter the parent's context.

Best for: It's best for parallel research.

Cost: The tool is free, but the tokens multiply.

The catch: Children don't share the parent's conversation, so the goal you hand them has to be clear.

6. MCP Servers: 8.5 Out Of 10

MCP lets Hermes use tools that live outside Hermes.

The catalogue command hermes mcp catalog listed 65 Nous-approved servers when I ran it on 10 October 2026, and hermes mcp install adds one by name.

Custom servers go in with hermes mcp add, and they're saved under mcp_servers in config.yaml.

Best for: It's best for connecting business apps such as Notion, Linear and Stripe.

Cost: It's free, plus each app's own price.

The catch: Every server adds more tools to the model's list, so I use hermes mcp configure to switch off the ones I don't need.

7. Browser Automation: 8.2 Out Of 10

The browser toolset includes browser_navigate, browser_click, browser_type, browser_snapshot and browser_vision.

Pages are shown to the model as text-based accessibility trees, which suits AI agents well.

Backends include Browser Use, Browserbase, Firecrawl, Camofox, Lightpanda and your own Chrome through /browser connect.

Best for: It's best for sites with no API.

Cost: It's free locally, and cloud browsers are paid.

The catch: It's slower and less reliable than an API, so I only use it when there's no other route.

8. Telegram Gateway: 8.2 Out Of 10

The messaging gateway connects Hermes to chat platforms, and Telegram is the one I use most.

You create a bot with @BotFather, run hermes gateway setup and add the token.

Best for: It's best for talking to your agent from your phone.

Cost: It's free.

The catch: Anyone with your bot token can control the bot, so keep it secret.

9. Obsidian: 8.0 Out Of 10

Obsidian is a free notes app built on plain text files.

I point Hermes at my vault so it reads the same memory as every other agent I run.

Best for: It's best for long-term memory you own.

Cost: It's free.

The catch: You have to give Hermes the full folder path, or it builds in its own workspace.

10. Ollama: 7.8 Out Of 10

Ollama runs models on your own machine, and ollama launch hermes --model qwen3.8 wired one into Hermes for me in one line.

In my test on an M4 Max, a 27B Qwen model ran at about 24.9 tokens a second once it was warm.

Best for: It's best for private, offline work.

Cost: It's free.

The catch: Local models are slower and weaker than the top cloud models, and my first reply took about 35 seconds while the model loaded.

11. Vision, Image Generation And Speech: 7.5 Out Of 10

The vision toolset analyses images, image_gen creates them through FAL.ai, and tts turns text into speech.

Text-to-speech has eleven providers in the docs, with Edge TTS as the free default.

Best for: It's best for content and voice replies.

Cost: It's free to paid, depending on the provider.

The catch: Image generation needs a FAL key or a Nous subscription.

12. Tailscale: 7.3 Out Of 10

Tailscale builds a private network between your own devices.

I use it to reach my Hermes machine from my phone when I'm away.

Best for: It's best for remote access without exposing your computer to the internet.

Cost: I use the free plan.

The catch: It's one more thing to install on every device.

Honourable Mentions That Didn't Make The 12

Computer use is a built-in toolset that controls the desktop in the background on macOS, Windows and Linux.

It needs a helper called cua-driver, which you install with hermes computer-use install.

Memory and session search are built in too, and they let Hermes remember facts and search past conversations.

Code execution runs Python scripts that call Hermes tools, which is handy for batch jobs.

X search reads public posts on X, but it's off by default and it needs xAI credentials.

The Claude Subscription DirectSDK plugin from Nous Research lets Hermes use a Claude subscription as its brain, which makes Claude Code a strong companion.

The Nous Tool Gateway bundles web search, images, speech and cloud browsing into a paid Nous Portal subscription.

Pros And Cons Of The Hermes Agent Tool System

Pros Cons
The core tools are free and on by default. Some of the best backends need separate paid keys.
You can set a different tool list for each platform. A long tool list can confuse a weaker model.
Web search works with no key on day one. Browser automation is slower than a proper API.
MCP opens the door to apps Hermes doesn't cover natively. Community servers and plugins need checking before you trust them.
One command, hermes tools, manages everything. The terminal menu can feel daunting to a complete beginner.

How To Choose The Right Hermes Agent Tools

Start with the defaults, because terminal, files, web and cron cover most jobs.

Add the Telegram gateway next if you want your agent on your phone.

Add MCP servers when you need a specific business app.

Add Obsidian when you're tired of repeating yourself.

Add Ollama when privacy or cost matters more than raw model quality.

Skip anything you can't name a real job for.

If you're still choosing a model to drive all this, my roundup of the best AI models for coding is a useful companion.

If you want jobs to give these tools, my list of the best Hermes Agent use cases has them.

Final Verdict On The Best Hermes Agent Tools

The terminal toolset is my number one, and it's the tool that makes Hermes worth installing.

Web search and cron complete the top three, and all three are free and on by default.

The companion tools are where it gets personal, so pick the ones that match how you actually work.

How many built-in tools does Hermes Agent have?

Costs come from backends such as FAL.ai, paid voice providers, cloud browsers and any app you connect through MCP.
