Generative engine optimization vs SEO has a clear verdict from me: SEO wins on measurability and control, GEO wins on the value of a single mention, and GEO can't work without SEO underneath it.
So the right answer isn't to pick a winner, it's to treat SEO as the base and GEO as the multiplier on top.
I've judged the two in eight rounds below, with my own scores, so you can see exactly where each one is stronger.
The scores are my opinion from running both on my own sites, and every factual claim is linked to its source.

The Scorecard: Generative Engine Optimization vs SEO
Here's the full scorecard first, out of 5 for each round, with the reason behind every score.
| Round | SEO | GEO | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Clear goal | 5 | 4 | SEO aims at a ranking, while GEO aims at a mention that can be worded many ways. |
| 2. Value of one win | 3 | 5 | An AI answer names maybe one to three businesses, so each mention carries more weight. |
| 3. Measurability | 5 | 2 | Search Console reports clicks, while AI mentions need a manual or agent-run log. |
| 4. Control | 3 | 2 | You control your pages in both, but the AI decides how to word its answer. |
| 5. Independence | 5 | 1 | SEO works alone, while GEO leans on the pages that already rank. |
| 6. Speed of new wins | 3 | 4 | Fresh, first-mover pages can show up in AI answers quickly, as my own example shows. |
| 7. Resistance to spam tricks | 3 | 4 | The GEO paper found keyword stuffing performed poorly in AI answers. |
| 8. Proof required | 3 | 5 | AI answers favour pages with real sources, quotes, numbers and case studies. |
| Total | 30 | 27 | SEO edges it as a standalone, but GEO lifts what SEO already earns. |
The totals are close on purpose, because they're not really competing.

Quick Definitions Before The Rounds
SEO stands for search engine optimisation, which is getting your pages ranked in the search results.
GEO stands for generative engine optimisation, which is getting your business named inside an AI answer.
The term GEO comes from the 2023 paper GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, written by a team from Princeton University, IIT Delhi and two independent researchers and accepted to KDD 2024.
The paper describes generative engines as tools that gather information from several sources and summarise it with a large language model.
Round 1: The Goal
SEO has a simple target, which is a position in the results.
GEO has a fuzzier target, because you want to be named, cited or recommended, and the AI can phrase that in many ways.
Old SEO gave people ten blue links, and if you ranked seventh you still got some clicks.
AI answers usually give a short list of one to three names, so there's no room for number seven.
Round 1 verdict: SEO wins on clarity, but GEO's target is the one buyers increasingly see first.
Round 2: The Value Of One Win
A single ranking is one link among many on the page.
A single AI mention is often the whole answer.
In my GEO video, Google's AI Overview for "best geo expert" names me first and cites several of my pages.
That one mention does more for trust than a seventh-place ranking ever did.
Round 2 verdict: GEO wins, because each win is scarcer and more visible.
Round 3: Measurability
SEO is easy to measure in Google Search Console with clicks, impressions, click-through rate and position.
GEO is harder, because Google counts AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic inside the normal "Web" totals in Search Console rather than in its own report.
Google says that on its AI features and your website page.
In my latest video I also point out that Google and the AI engines don't report AI traffic well yet.
So for GEO you need a weekly prompt log that records who the AI names and which pages it cites.
Round 3 verdict: SEO wins clearly.
Round 4: Control
With SEO, you control your page, and the search engine decides where to rank it.
With GEO, you control your page, and the AI decides whether to mention you and how to describe you.
That second step is a layer of control you simply don't have.
Nobody can guarantee what an AI answer will say, and that includes me.
Round 4 verdict: SEO wins narrowly.
Round 5: Independence
This is the round that decides the whole debate.
SEO can work on its own.
GEO can't, because the AI reads the pages that rank and sums up what they say.
I compare it to five friends recommending the same restaurant, because if five good pages in the top ten say the same name, the AI repeats that name.
Google also says a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet before it can be a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
Round 5 verdict: SEO wins by a mile, and it's why I call SEO the base.

Round 6: Speed Of New Wins
Classic SEO can take a while, especially on a new site.
GEO can move fast on fresh topics.
In my GEO video, my AI Profit Boardroom ranks first for "best AI SEO community", and that article was three days old when I checked it.
I also try to publish within 24 hours of a topic appearing, like "Jev architecture" and "Jev waitlist" the weekend Jev AI dropped.
That's my result rather than a timeline anyone can promise.
Round 6 verdict: GEO wins, as long as the page is indexed.
Round 7: Resistance To Spam Tricks
Old SEO tricks like stuffing keywords into a page never aged well.
The GEO paper tested keyword stuffing and found it performed poorly in generative engine answers.
The methods that worked best were adding citations, quotations and statistics, which the paper says improved visibility by roughly 30 to 40 percent on its main measure.
Round 7 verdict: GEO wins, because it rewards substance over tricks.

Round 8: Proof Required
SEO can rank a decent page without much original proof if the competition is weak.
GEO leans harder on proof, because the AI wants something worth citing.
That's why every page I publish has a real case study, meaning something I tested and a real result.
The AI can't write about a test only you ran.
Google's guidance on generative AI content, updated on 1 October 2026, also says it's "critical" to manually fact-check AI-written content before publishing.
Round 8 verdict: GEO wins, and it pushes your content quality up as a bonus.
The Metrics Compared Side By Side
Here's a reference table of what you'd track for each one.
| What you track | SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| Main win | A ranking position. | A mention or citation in the answer. |
| Volume | Clicks and impressions. | How many of your target questions name you. |
| Quality | Click-through rate. | Whether the AI describes you accurately. |
| Sources | Backlinks pointing at you. | Your own URLs listed beside the AI answer. |
| Tool | Google Search Console. | A weekly prompt log. |
| Where Google reports it | The Performance report. | Inside the same "Web" totals, with no separate AI report. |
My Evidence For The Verdict
I don't want you taking scores on trust, so here's what I show on my own screens.
The AI Overview for "best HARO agency" lists five suppliers and links Goldie Agency first, and Goldie Agency also ranks first organically.
The AI answer for "who is the best Hermes AI SEO expert" recommends me and cites my content from several platforms.
In my latest video, Google's AI Mode lists me first when asked for the best GEO experts to follow in 2026, and Perplexity lists me among GEO experts too, even though I don't really use Perplexity.
One of my sites went from zero to about 1,300 Google clicks a day, and on one day it got over 9,600 impressions inside Google's AI features.
One of my sites flopped as well, which is why I'd never promise these numbers.

Who Should Lean Harder On Each One
| You are | Lean harder on | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A new site with little indexed | SEO | The AI can't cite pages Google hasn't indexed. |
| A site that ranks but isn't named | GEO | The gap is agreement and proof, not rankings. |
| A personal brand or consultant | GEO | "Best [topic] expert" answers depend on what many pages say about you. |
| An e-commerce store | SEO, with GEO on comparison pages | Google says Merchant Center data should be up to date, and comparison questions suit AI answers. |
| A local service business | Both | Consistent business facts across sites help both layers. |
Red Flags In Either Camp
- Be wary of anyone who says SEO is dead, because GEO depends on it.
- Be wary of anyone selling "AI text files" or special schema for Google's AI features, because Google says you don't need them.
- Be wary of anyone who guarantees AI mentions, because nobody controls the answer.
- Be wary of AI-written pages without a human fact-check, because that goes against Google's latest guidance.
How To Get Help
The free AEO SEO strategy session is what I call a free one-to-one GEO, AEO AI audit.
It's a call rather than a written report, where my team looks at your site, competitors and nearest keywords and gives you a custom game plan.
The AI Profit Boardroom is the other route, with my Agent OS, a search OS that finds GEO keywords from your own Search Console data, my SEO skill and four coaching calls a week alongside 3,400+ members.
Final Verdict On Generative Engine Optimization vs SEO
SEO scores 30 and GEO scores 27 on my card, but that's the wrong way to read it.
SEO is the base that gets you read, and GEO is the multiplier that gets you named.
Run both, measure both, and shift your effort to whichever one your weekly log says is weakest.

FAQ: Generative Engine Optimization vs SEO Verdict
Which is better, generative engine optimization vs SEO?
Neither is better on its own, because they do different jobs.
SEO gets your pages ranked and read, and GEO gets the AI to name you from those pages, so SEO is the base and GEO is the multiplier.
Can GEO work without SEO?
Not for Google's AI features, because Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet before it can appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
AI answers also lean on the pages that already rank.
Why does GEO score lower on measurability?
Google counts AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic inside the normal Search Console totals rather than in a separate report.
That means you need your own weekly log of who the AI names and which pages it cites.
What did the GEO research paper find?
The 2023 paper found that adding citations, quotations and statistics improved visibility in generative engine answers.
It also found that keyword stuffing, a classic SEO trick, performed poorly.
Are your scores objective?
No, the scores are my opinion from running both on my own sites.
The facts behind them are linked to Google's documentation, the GEO paper and my own screens.
Is the free strategy session a written report?
No, it's a free one-to-one call rather than a written report.
My team looks at your site, your competitors and the keywords you're closest to winning, then gives you a custom game plan.
