Generative engine optimization vs traditional SEO gets a split verdict from me: most traditional foundations still earn their place, a few tactics need changing, and a handful should be dropped.
The reason is simple, because traditional SEO was built for ten blue links, while AI answers name maybe one to three businesses and leave no room for number seven.
So instead of scoring "old SEO" against "new SEO" as two blobs, I've rated twelve classic tactics one by one for the AI-answer era.
Each rating is my opinion from running both on my own sites, and every factual claim links to Google's documentation, the GEO paper or my own screens.

The Ratings: 12 Traditional SEO Tactics In The GEO Era
Here's the full table first, with a keep, change or drop verdict and a score out of 5 for how much each tactic still matters.
| # | Traditional SEO tactic | Verdict | Still matters (out of 5) | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Technical crawlability and indexing | Keep | 5 | Google says a page must be indexed and snippet-eligible to appear in its AI features. |
| 2 | Robots.txt access | Keep | 5 | Google lists allowing crawling in robots.txt and your CDN as a best practice for AI features. |
| 3 | Internal linking | Keep | 4 | Google lists internal links as a way to make content findable for AI features. |
| 4 | Page experience | Keep | 4 | Google still lists a great page experience as a best practice. |
| 5 | Structured data | Change | 3 | It still helps, but it must match the visible text, and there's no special AI schema. |
| 6 | Title tags and meta descriptions | Change | 3 | They still matter, and Google's 1 October 2026 guidance says to fact-check them if AI wrote them. |
| 7 | Link building | Change | 4 | Links still help pages rank, and mentions on trusted sites help the AI see agreement. |
| 8 | Keyword research | Change | 4 | You still need it, but you research the questions buyers ask AI tools as well as short keywords. |
| 9 | One page per exact-match keyword | Change | 2 | The AI answers the whole question, so one strong answer-first page beats many thin ones. |
| 10 | Rank tracking as the only report | Change | 2 | Rankings still matter, but you also need to track who the AI names and cites. |
| 11 | Keyword stuffing | Drop | 1 | The GEO paper found keyword stuffing performed poorly in AI answers. |
| 12 | Thin content without real experience | Drop | 1 | AI answers favour pages with real sources, numbers and case studies. |
Four tactics stay as they are, six change and two get dropped.

The Two Approaches In One Sentence Each
Traditional SEO is the work of ranking a page on a results page with ten blue links.
GEO, or generative engine optimisation, is the work of becoming one of the few names inside an AI answer.
The term GEO comes from the 2023 paper GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, by a team from Princeton University, IIT Delhi and two independent researchers, which was accepted to KDD 2024.
The Old Way vs The New Way
| Traditional SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| What the searcher sees | Ten blue links. | A written answer naming one to three businesses. |
| What a seventh-place result gets | Some clicks. | Usually nothing, because there's no room for number seven. |
| What gets rewarded | Relevance, technical health and links. | The same basics, plus agreement across pages and real proof. |
| Who decides the wording | You do, in your title and snippet. | The AI does, based on what the pages it reads say. |
That last row is the biggest change, because you no longer write the sentence the buyer reads.
Why The Keep Tactics Still Score High
The AI reads the pages that rank and sums up what they say.
I explain it like five friends recommending the same restaurant, because if five good pages agree on a name, the AI repeats it.
So anything that helps your pages get crawled, indexed and ranked still feeds the AI answer.
Google's AI features and your website page says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
It lists the same fundamentals I'd always check, including robots.txt access, internal links, page experience, text content and good images and video.
Verdict on the keep group: these are the foundation, and nothing about GEO replaces them.
Why The Change Tactics Lost Points
Structured data
Structured data still has a job, but Google says there's no special schema.org markup you need for its AI features.
It also says your structured data should match the visible text on the page.
Verdict: keep using it accurately, but stop expecting it to unlock AI answers on its own.
Titles and meta descriptions
These still shape how your page appears in the results.
Google updated its page on using generative AI content on 1 October 2026, and it says the manual fact-check covers titles, meta descriptions, structured data and alt text.
Verdict: still worth writing well, and now worth checking by hand if an AI drafted them.
Link building
I've built a link-building agency, so I'm not going to tell you links stopped mattering.
They still help pages rank, which is how pages get read by the AI.
What's changed is that mentions on trusted sites also help the AI see that other sources agree about you.
Verdict: still strong, with more weight on relevant, trusted mentions.
Keyword research
You still need to know what people search for.
The change is that buyers now ask AI tools full questions, so I research those alongside short keywords.
In my latest video I show Hermes Agent reading my Search Console export and suggesting topics to rank inside AI search engines, which is keyword research for the new era.
Verdict: still essential, with a wider net.
One page per exact-match keyword
The old habit was a separate page for every small keyword variation.
AI answers respond to the whole question, so one strong answer-first page usually serves the buyer better.
Verdict: consolidate thin variations into stronger pages.
Rank tracking as the only report
Rankings still matter, because they decide which pages the AI reads.
But Google counts AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic inside the normal Search Console totals under the "Web" search type, with no separate AI report.
In my latest video I also say that Google and the AI engines don't report AI traffic well yet.
Verdict: keep tracking rankings, and add a weekly log of who the AI names and cites.

Why The Drop Tactics Fail
Keyword stuffing
The GEO paper tested a method that adds more keywords from the query, which it describes as classic SEO.
It found that keyword stuffing performed poorly in generative engine answers.
The best methods were adding citations, quotations and statistics, which improved visibility by roughly 30 to 40 percent on the paper's main measure.
Verdict: drop it, because it doesn't help with readers or with AI answers.
Thin content without real experience
Every page I publish now has a real case study, meaning something I tested and a real result.
The AI can't write about a test only you ran, so a page with real proof becomes the source it has to cite.
A thin page with nothing original gives the AI no reason to pick you.
Verdict: drop it and replace it with case-study pages.
What Replaces The Dropped Tactics
I call my replacement system the answer engine, and it has three moves.
| Move | What it replaces | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Be the source | Thin, keyword-led pages. | Every page carries a real case study, test or result. |
| Be everywhere | Relying on one website. | Several sites and platforms point to the same answer from different angles. |
| Be first | Waiting months for a page to climb. | Publishing within 24 hours of a new topic appearing. |
I run multiple websites, each with a different angle, which is how I can show up two to four times on page one for one search.
My subreddit, AI SEO Insider, ranks on page one too.
When Jev AI dropped, I published on "Jev architecture" and "Jev waitlist" that same weekend.
The Evidence Behind My Ratings
In my GEO video, the AI Overview for "best HARO agency" lists five suppliers and links Goldie Agency first, and Goldie Agency ranks first organically too.
That shows the keep tactics and the new moves working together on the same pages.
Google's AI Overview for "best geo expert" names me first and says I'm known for documenting GEO experiments and public testing.
My AI Profit Boardroom ranks first for "best AI SEO community", and that article was three days old when I checked it.
One of my sites went from zero to about 1,300 Google clicks a day, with over 9,600 impressions inside Google's AI features on one day.
These are my own screens, one of my sites flopped, and nobody can guarantee what an AI answer will say.

Red Flags When Someone Pitches "New SEO"
- I'd be wary of anyone who says traditional SEO is dead, because Google still says its fundamentals apply.
- I'd be wary of anyone selling AI text files or special schema for Google's AI features, because Google says you don't need them.
- I'd be wary of anyone who guarantees AI mentions, because nobody controls the answer.
- I'd be wary of anyone who publishes AI content without a human fact-check, because Google calls that review critical.
How To Get Help
The free AEO SEO strategy session is what I call a free one-to-one GEO, AEO AI audit.
It's a call rather than a written report, where my team looks at your site, competitors and nearest keywords and gives you a custom game plan.

Final Verdict On Generative Engine Optimization vs Traditional SEO
Traditional SEO keeps its foundations, because four of my twelve tactics stay exactly as they were.
Six tactics need changing so they serve an AI answer as well as a results page.
Two tactics, keyword stuffing and thin content, should go, and the answer engine's three moves replace them.
