An AEO audit is a check of whether AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google's AI Overviews name your brand, cite your pages and get your facts right, and this checklist ranks the 12 checks inside one by impact.

My verdict up front is that four checks matter more than everything else combined, which are the buyer prompt panel, the cited sources, crawler access and third-party coverage.

If you'd like an expert to go through the high-impact checks with you, book a free SEO strategy session and get a competitor gap analysis.

Every check below has a score for impact and effort, the tool I use and my one-line verdict.

I read the official crawler and AI features documentation from OpenAI, Perplexity and Google on 17 October 2026 before scoring anything.

The AEO Audit Checklist At A Glance

Impact is scored out of 5 for how much the check usually moves AI visibility, and effort is scored out of 5 for how much work it takes, where 5 is the most work.

Rank Check Impact Effort Tool I use Verdict
1 Buyer prompt panel 5 3 A spreadsheet and the AI tools themselves Non-negotiable, because it is the audit
2 Cited sources 5 2 The same prompt log The best map of where to earn coverage
3 Crawler access 5 1 Your robots.txt file and CDN settings Cheap to check and fatal if wrong
4 Third-party coverage 5 5 The cited-sources list The biggest lever and the slowest fix
5 Indexing and snippet eligibility 4 1 Search Console URL Inspection A five-minute check on key pages
6 Answer accuracy 4 2 The prompt log Often the cheapest win in the audit
7 Competitor share 4 2 The prompt log It tells you who you're really up against
8 Entity facts 4 2 A one-page fact file Consistency makes you easier to describe
9 Answer-first content 4 3 Your top ten pages High value on the pages closest to a sale
10 FAQ sections 3 2 Your top ten pages Easy to add and easy to quote
11 Schema basics 2 2 Rich Results Test and Schema Markup Validator Worth doing, but not a secret weapon
12 Measurement setup 3 1 Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools Without it you can't prove anything

These scores are my own judgement from running this process on my sites, and your log may rank them differently.

What An AEO Audit Is And What It Isn't

AEO stands for answer engine optimisation, which is the work of getting your brand named and cited in AI-written answers.

An AEO audit is the measurement step that comes before that work.

It is not a ranking report, because AI answers don't have positions in the way the blue links do.

It is not a guarantee of anything either, because nobody controls what a model says.

For the bigger picture on the discipline, my King of AEO post covers how I run answer engine optimisation day to day.

Check 1: The Buyer Prompt Panel

The prompt panel is a fixed list of 20 to 50 questions your buyers really ask an AI tool before they choose a company.

I mix best-of, comparison, problem, brand, alternatives and local questions so the whole journey is covered.

Each prompt goes into ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google in a fresh chat, and each one runs at least twice.

Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode can use different models and techniques, so I check both separately.

Verdict: this check scores 5 for impact because every other check is judged against what the panel shows.

Check 2: Cited Sources

Every AI answer that shows sources tells you which websites the tool trusts for that question.

I log every cited URL and then count how often each domain appears across the whole panel.

The domains that keep coming up are your real competition for attention, even when they aren't competitors in business.

Verdict: this scores 5 for impact and only 2 for effort, because the data is already in your log.

Check 3: Crawler Access

An AI search tool can't cite a page its crawler isn't allowed to read.

Crawler Owner What it does according to the official docs
OAI-SearchBot OpenAI It surfaces websites in ChatGPT's search features, and OpenAI recommends allowing it
GPTBot OpenAI It crawls content that may be used for model training, and it is a separate setting
PerplexityBot Perplexity It surfaces and links websites in Perplexity's search results, and Perplexity recommends allowing it
Googlebot Google Google says crawling must be allowed in robots.txt and by any CDN or hosting setup

The sources are OpenAI's crawler page, Perplexity's crawler page and Google's guide to AI features.

OpenAI and Perplexity both say a robots.txt change can take around 24 hours to take effect.

Verdict: this scores 5 for impact and 1 for effort, because it takes minutes and a block undoes everything else.

Check 4: Third-Party Coverage

This check asks whether your brand appears on the sites the AI cites most for your market.

My strategy session page explains the logic, because it says AI platforms don't recommend brands simply because those brands publish more on their own websites.

It says they look for consistent signals across the wider web, including trusted publications, expert articles, independent reviews, comparisons and credible third-party references.

Verdict: this scores 5 for impact and 5 for effort, because it is the biggest lever and also the one that takes relationships and time.

Check 5: Indexing And Snippet Eligibility

Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode.

Google also says there are no additional technical requirements beyond that.

I use the URL Inspection tool in Search Console on the five pages that matter most and look for any nosnippet rules.

Verdict: this scores 4 for impact because it only matters for Google's AI features, but it costs almost nothing to check.

Check 6: Answer Accuracy

This check asks whether the facts each AI states about you are correct.

I mark every answer that gets a price, service, location or founder detail wrong.

Verdict: this scores 4 for impact because a wrong fact hurts every answer it appears in, and fixing your own facts is cheap.

Check 7: Competitor Share

This check counts how often each competitor is named across the panel compared with you.

It can surface a competitor you weren't watching, which is useful because that brand's coverage shows you what the AI is reading.

Verdict: this scores 4 for impact because it tells you who to study and which of their coverage you're missing.

Check 8: Entity Facts

An entity is a clear and consistent picture of who you are, what you sell and who you serve.

I write a one-page fact file and compare it with the About page, social profiles, the Google Business Profile and directory listings.

Google's own advice includes keeping Merchant Center and Business Profile information up to date.

Verdict: this scores 4 for impact and 2 for effort, and it is usually a single afternoon of work.

Check 9: Answer-First Content

This check reads the first sentence of your ten most important pages.

My own rule is that the first sentence must answer the main question directly and stay under fifty words.

Headings should be real questions or full claims, and comparisons, prices and steps should sit in tables or lists.

Verdict: this scores 4 for impact on the pages closest to a sale and 3 for effort because each page needs a careful rewrite.

Check 10: FAQ Sections

This check asks whether each important page ends with four to six real questions and short, direct answers.

I take the questions from Search Console queries, sales calls and the prompt panel itself.

Verdict: this scores 3 for impact and 2 for effort, and my AI agents can draft the first version in seconds for a person to review.

Check 11: Schema Basics

Structured data is the code that labels a page for machines, such as Article and FAQPage markup.

I run key pages through Google's Rich Results Test or the Schema Markup Validator.

Google says structured data should match the visible text, and it also says no special schema.org markup is needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.

Verdict: this scores only 2 for impact, because it is good hygiene and not the secret some people sell it as.

Check 12: Measurement Setup

This check makes sure you can see change after the audit.

Google counts AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic inside the "Web" search type of the Search Console Performance report.

Bing Webmaster Tools added an AI Performance report in public preview on 10 February 2026, and Microsoft says it shows how often your pages are cited in Microsoft Copilot and AI-generated summaries in Bing.

The prompt panel itself is the third part of measurement, so I set a monthly re-run date before I close the audit.

Verdict: this scores 3 for impact and 1 for effort, and skipping it makes the whole audit unprovable.

The Checks I Wouldn't Pay For

Some things get sold as AEO audit essentials, and I'd leave them off the bill.

  • I wouldn't pay for an AI text file as the fix, because Google says you don't need new machine-readable files or AI text files to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
  • I wouldn't pay for special AI schema, because Google says there is no special schema.org structured data you need to add.
  • I wouldn't pay for a single screenshot of one AI answer, because answers change from one chat to the next.
  • I wouldn't pay anyone who guarantees a mention, because nobody can guarantee what a model says.

How The Checks Fit Together

The twelve checks fall into three groups, and the order matters.

Group Checks When to run them
Measure Prompt panel, cited sources, accuracy, competitor share First, because they set the baseline
Unblock Crawler access, indexing, measurement setup Second, because they are quick and they stop everything else failing
Improve Third-party coverage, entity facts, answer-first content, FAQs, schema Third, because they are the real work

I go deeper on the write-up side in my sibling guide to a free AEO report, and I combine these checks with classic SEO checks in my free SEO and GEO audit post.

DIY, Agency Or Free Session: My Verdict

Route Best for What you get My score out of 5
DIY with this checklist Small businesses with one main service A full baseline and a fix list you own 4
A free strategy session with my team Brands that want an expert view before spending A custom visibility plan, an AI visibility roadmap and a competitor gap analysis 4
A hired agency Brands that need coverage earned at scale Ongoing work on the improve checks 4

I've scored my own session the same as the other routes on purpose, because the right one depends on your size and your time.

The session is a conversation and a plan, and it isn't an automated tool or a written report.

Final Verdict On The AEO Audit Checklist

Run the four 5-impact checks first, because they decide most of the outcome.

Fix crawler blocks and wrong facts the same week, because they are cheap.

Then put your time into third-party coverage and answer-first pages, and re-run the prompt panel every month.

FAQ: AEO Audit Checklist

What should an AEO audit checklist include?

It should include a buyer prompt panel, cited sources, answer accuracy, competitor share, crawler access, indexing, entity facts, third-party coverage, answer-first content, FAQ sections, schema basics and a measurement setup.

The prompt panel, cited sources, crawler access and third-party coverage matter most.

Which AEO audit check has the biggest impact?

The buyer prompt panel and third-party coverage have the biggest impact in my scoring.

Crawler access is just as important when something is blocked, because a blocked crawler can't cite you at all.

Is schema important in an AEO audit?

Schema is good hygiene, so check that it is valid and matches the visible text.

Google says there is no special schema.org markup needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, so it isn't a secret weapon.

Do I need an llms.txt or AI text file to pass an AEO audit?

Google says you don't need new machine-readable files or AI text files to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.

I wouldn't pay anyone to create one as the main fix.

How do I measure results after an AEO audit?

Re-run the same prompt panel every month and compare it with your dated baseline.

Use the Web search type in the Search Console Performance report for Google's AI features and the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools for Copilot and Bing.
