Open Design Motion is the free, open-source motion design feature of Open Design, and my verdict is that it is the best free way I've found to turn a prompt into an editable motion video.

It arrived in Open Design v0.25.0 on 15 October 2026, a release its team codenamed "OpenDesign Motion" and billed as "The Open-Source Alternative to Claude Motion".

The project is on GitHub at nexu-io/open-design, it is licensed under Apache-2.0, and the tool costs nothing to use.

I tested it inside my own Agent OS, and below I go through every feature I saw plus the ones the official release notes add.

Each feature gets a plain explanation, a score out of five and a note on where it falls short.

What Open Design Motion Is

Open Design describes itself as "the 1st collaborative AI design agent workspace", and it is local-first and open source.

Motion is the workspace's video feature.

Your agent writes HTML, CSS and GSAP code, and HyperFrames renders that code into a deterministic MP4 through headless Chrome and FFmpeg.

HyperFrames is HeyGen's open-source, agent-native video framework, and Open Design integrates it as a first-class part of the app.

How To Install It

I'm only listing the install routes the official README gives.

The README recommends the desktop app as the fastest way in, with no Node, no pnpm and no clone needed.

  • macOS users on Apple Silicon or Intel get it from open-design.ai or GitHub Releases.
  • Windows x64 users get it from the same two places.
  • Linux users currently run it from source, because the official releases don't include a prebuilt Linux app.

These are the README's run-from-source commands.

git clone https://github.com/nexu-io/open-design.git
cd open-design
corepack enable && pnpm install
pnpm tools-dev run web

To use it inside a coding agent without the GUI, the README gives this command.

od mcp install <agent>

On a Mac, the README warns that od may resolve to Apple's built-in /usr/bin/od tool, so desktop users should copy the snippet from Settings โ†’ MCP server instead.

Feature By Feature: Open Design Motion Reviewed

One-prompt motion design: 5/5

My first prompt asked for a 20-second paper cutout story that worked as a trailer for Open Design.

It built the full motion design in the background without me touching a timeline.

From what I saw, it was genuinely better than what my normal human team can do, and that is my opinion from my own test.

The release notes say that when you ask for a video, you get editable source files and an MP4.

Any agent or model: 5/5

Open Design doesn't ship its own agent, and the README says the agents on your PATH are the design engine.

When I opened it, it scanned the agents and CLIs I already had installed, such as OpenCode and Hermes Agent.

You can switch agents and CLIs, including Hermes Agent, Kimi CLI and Antigravity, and there is a local mode.

You don't need Opus 5.5 for this job.

I showed free models inside OpenCode, including LongCat, MiMo v2.6, Nemotron 3.5 Super, GLM-5.3 Flash and DeepSeek V4.1 Flash, which were free there when I recorded.

I often use those same models as the brain for Hermes.

The README also lists DeepSeek Harness as a native runtime, which ties in with my DeepSeek Harness review.

Five bundled motion examples: 4.5/5

The release ships Motion Future, Product Promo, Showreel, UI Morph and Visual Lesson.

Each one comes with bundled scripts, fonts, audio and previews, so you can edit straight from the example.

I'd like to see more examples over time, which is why this isn't a full five.

Templates with BPM and style: 4.5/5

You pick a template, write your prompt, and set the BPM and the style.

My second test was a 20-second high-energy reel titled "The AI Profit Boardroom community is the best to learn AI automation".

Setting the beat up front is a small touch that makes reels feel deliberate rather than random.

The release notes also say motion skills are available from the @ picker in the composer.

Edit and rebrand: 4.5/5

You can feed it a previous example and ask it to turn that into a motion design.

You can give it your brand colours and ask it to restyle the video.

Because the video is code, those edits keep the parts you already liked.

Preview, code view, export and share: 4.5/5

Every project gives you a preview, a code view, an export option and a share option.

The release notes say video export checks that the MP4 can play, and a failed export keeps the editable source available.

Interactive animations stay as runnable HTML rather than being flattened into video.

The release notes also say sound stops when you leave the active preview.

Background builds and recent projects: 5/5

Several projects can build at the same time in the background.

Recent projects show up with previews, so you can see your work at a glance.

In my setup, everything landed in my Agent OS workspace, which keeps the whole library organised.

More than motion: 4/5

Home also offers slide decks, documents, images, websites, HyperFrames and live artifacts.

Live artifacts are live dashboards you can share.

I focused my test on motion, so I'm scoring the rest on what the official sources describe rather than a deep test.

Install and platforms: 3.5/5

The macOS and Windows apps are the easy route.

Linux users have to run it from source for now, and the od name clash on Macs is a small but real trap.

That's the weakest part of the package, and it is still perfectly workable.

Open Design Motion vs Claude Motion

The Open Design team positions this release directly as "The Open-Source Alternative to Claude Motion".

The idea is similar in both tools, because you describe a video and AI builds it.

I prefer Open Design, because it looks more interesting and clean to me and it is easier to keep all my motion designs in one place.

Round Open Design Motion My call
Idea You describe a video and an agent builds it as code. The core idea is similar in both.
Look I found the results interesting and clean. Open Design wins on taste for me.
Organisation All motion designs sit together with previews. Open Design wins for keeping work in one place.
Freedom It is open source and runs on any agent or model. Open Design wins on choice.
Cost The tool is free, with an optional paid Design Plan. Open Design wins for tight budgets.

That table reflects my own preference after using Open Design, so test both if your team already pays for Claude.

Limits And What It Doesn't Do

It doesn't include a prebuilt Linux desktop app in the official releases yet.

It doesn't pick a great model for you, so weak models give weaker videos.

It doesn't guarantee free models stay free, because the OpenCode offers I showed were free at the time I recorded.

It doesn't hide telemetry entirely, since the README says scrubbed safety and reliability telemetry is always on while analytics and session replay are consent-gated.

It doesn't force the paid Design Plan on you, so you can ignore that upsell if your own agents work.

For posting, I pair it with Blotato, which posts my videos automatically and shows me which platforms perform best.

Who Should Use It

Creators who need lots of short videos should use it today.

Small businesses that can't justify a motion designer should use it for trailers, promos and explainers.

Agencies should try it for branded client videos and shareable dashboards.

Linux-only users should be comfortable running from source before they start.

Final Verdict

Open Design Motion gets 4.5 out of 5 from me.

It turns one prompt into a real motion design, it works with free models, and it keeps every project organised.

It loses half a point for the Linux gap and the setup traps, and neither of those should stop you trying it.
