Generative engine optimization vs AEO gets a practical verdict from me: GEO tactics carry the bigger payoff in 2026, AEO tactics are quicker to ship, and the highest-scoring tactics of all are the shared ones that help both.
So prioritise GEO if your buyers ask AI for recommendations, prioritise AEO if they ask quick factual questions, and start with the shared tactics either way.
GEO, or generative engine optimisation, is getting your business named inside answers that AI writes.
AEO, or answer engine optimisation, is getting your page chosen as the direct answer in a featured snippet or a spoken reply.
Below I score 12 tactics and then the tools for each job, and every score is my own opinion from running this on my own sites.

The 12 Tactics Scored At A Glance
This table rates each tactic out of 10 for impact and for ease, and it's my opinion rather than a measured benchmark.
| # | Tactic | Which job | Impact | Ease | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Answer the question in the first two lines under a question heading | Both | 9 | 9 | Do it first, because it's quick and helps both jobs. |
| 2 | Keep crawling, indexing and snippets allowed on key pages | Both | 10 | 8 | Do it first, because nothing else works without it. |
| 3 | Add a real case study with real numbers to every key page | GEO | 10 | 6 | Do it on every money page, because nobody can copy it. |
| 4 | Cite sources, add quotes and add statistics | GEO | 8 | 7 | Do it, because the GEO paper found these were its top methods. |
| 5 | Get other sites to describe you the same way | GEO | 9 | 4 | Start early, because it takes the longest. |
| 6 | Publish disclosed listicles that name your offer first | GEO | 8 | 7 | Do it for "best of" searches, and always disclose it. |
| 7 | Publish on new topics within 24 hours | GEO | 7 | 5 | Do it when your niche has fast-moving news. |
| 8 | Format answers as short lists or tables | AEO | 7 | 9 | Do it on any page with steps or options. |
| 9 | Write answers that make sense when read aloud | AEO | 5 | 8 | Do it if voice matters in your market. |
| 10 | Keep business facts identical everywhere | Both | 9 | 7 | Do it once, then keep it updated. |
| 11 | Fact-check every page by hand before publishing | Both | 9 | 6 | Always do it, because Google calls it critical for AI content. |
| 12 | Stuff the keyword into every paragraph | Neither | 1 | 9 | Skip it, because the GEO paper found it didn't help. |
The shared tactics score highest on average, which is why "GEO or AEO" is the wrong first question.
The right first question is whether your shared base is solid.

How I Scored Each Tactic
I scored impact on how much a tactic moved results on my own sites and on what the evidence says.
I scored ease on how fast an operator can ship it without outside help.
The evidence I leaned on was the paper GEO: Generative Engine Optimization by Pranjal Aggarwal and colleagues, accepted to KDD 2024, plus Google's own documentation.
Where I couldn't verify something, I left it out instead of scoring it.
The Shared Tactics, Reviewed
Tactic 1: Answer first under a question heading
This scores 9 for impact and 9 for ease, so it's the best value tactic on the list.
Featured snippets lift a short answer, and Google's featured snippets documentation describes them as results where the descriptive snippet shows first.
AI answers also quote clear claims, so the same two lines serve GEO as well.
Tactic 2: Crawling, indexing and snippets allowed
This scores 10 for impact because nothing else works without it.
Google's AI features and your website page says a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to be a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
For other AI tools, check your robots.txt against OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot documentation, Perplexity's PerplexityBot page and Anthropic's crawler help page.
OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot controls appearing in its search results separately from GPTBot, and Perplexity says PerplexityBot isn't used to crawl content for AI foundation models.
Tactics 10 and 11: Consistent facts and a human fact-check
Consistent facts score 9 for impact, because AI answers repeat what several sources agree on.
The fact-check scores 9 for impact too, because Google's 1 October 2026 update to its guidance on using generative AI content says it's "critical to manually factcheck" AI-generated content.
That review also covers titles, meta descriptions, structured data and image alt text.

The GEO-Only Tactics, Reviewed
Tactic 3: A real case study on every key page
This scores 10 for impact and 6 for ease, because you need real tests to write about.
The AI can't write about a test only you ran, so the case study turns your page into the source.
In my Hermes GEO video, AI Mode describes me as widely recognised as a top practitioner because of public testing and deployment.
That's the clearest evidence I've seen that showing your work is what gets you named.
Tactic 4: Sources, quotes and statistics
This scores 8 for impact because it's the tactic with published research behind it.
The GEO paper found that citing sources, adding quotations and adding statistics gave a 30% to 40% relative improvement on its position-adjusted word count measure.
It also found that lower-ranked pages gained the most, with the cite sources method lifting visibility by 115.1% for pages ranked fifth.
I knocked two points off because the paper also found results vary by subject, so test it on your own pages.
Tactic 5: Other sites describing you the same way
This scores 9 for impact but only 4 for ease, because you can't publish other people's pages for them.
I handle it by running several sites of my own with different angles that point to the same answer, which I call be everywhere.
My subreddit, AI SEO Insider, ranks on page one too, which shows the same idea works beyond websites.
Tactics 6 and 7: Disclosed listicles and being first
Disclosed listicles score 8 for impact, because they're one of the things working for me right now.
In my GEO examples video, AI Profit Boardroom ranks first for "best AI SEO community", and that article was three days old when I checked.
Being first scores 7, because publishing within 24 hours of a new topic means your page is often the only good answer available.
Both are my results from my own screens, and neither is a guarantee.

The AEO-Only Tactics, Reviewed
Tactic 8: Short lists and tables
This scores 9 for ease because you can reformat a page in minutes.
It scores 7 for impact, because a clean list or table is easy for a snippet to lift.
Tactic 9: Voice-friendly answers
This scores 5 for impact, because voice is a smaller share of searches for most businesses I work with.
News publishers are the exception, and Google documents speakable structured data, still in beta, for Google Assistant to read news sections aloud.
The Tactic That Scores Lowest
Keyword stuffing scores 1 for impact.
The GEO paper tested it and found it didn't help, and in its main results table it scored below the no-optimisation baseline on the position-adjusted word count measure.
Special AI files and special AI schema would score just as badly, because Google says there are no additional requirements, no special schema and no AI text files needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode.
Here's another video of mine, where I show how I approach ranking inside Google's AI Mode.
The Tools For Each Job, Scored
Tactics matter more than tools, but here's my verdict on the tools I'd consider for each job.
| Tool | Which job | Cost | My score out of 10 | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console | Both | Free | 9 | It's essential, and it counts AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic inside the "Web" search type. |
| A manual prompt log in a spreadsheet | GEO | Free | 8 | It's the cheapest way to see who AI answers name each week. |
| Hermes Agent reading a Search Console export | GEO | Free | 8 | It turns your own data into GEO topic ideas, as I show in my video. |
| Rich Results Test | Both | Free | 7 | It checks your structured data, which Google says should match your visible text. |
| Schema Markup Validator | Both | Free | 6 | It checks any schema.org markup beyond the types Google supports. |
| Ahrefs Brand Radar | GEO | Paid | 7 | It tracks brand visibility across AI answers, YouTube and Reddit, which saves time at scale. |
| Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit | GEO | Paid | 7 | It tracks brand visibility in AI search, which suits teams already using Semrush. |
I've described the paid tools only from their own pages, and I haven't scored their prices because I don't quote prices.
I scored the paid tools a little lower than the free ones only because most businesses should prove the method before paying for tracking.
In my Hermes GEO video I also point out that Google and the AI engines don't yet report AI traffic well, which is why a prompt log still matters even with paid tools.

Which To Prioritise: My Verdict By Situation
Here's how the scores translate into a priority for different situations.
- If your buyers ask "who is the best", prioritise the GEO tactics, starting with case studies.
- If your buyers ask quick factual questions, prioritise the AEO tactics, starting with lists and tables.
- If you're a news publisher, give voice-friendly answers and speakable markup more weight than I did.
- If you're a local service business, run both, because customers ask both kinds of question.
- If you only have one afternoon, do tactics 1, 2 and 10, because they help both jobs.
Proof From My Own Screens
In my GEO examples video, Google's AI Overview for "best geo expert" names me first and cites several of my pages.
The AI Overview for "best HARO agency" lists five suppliers and links Goldie Agency first.
In my Hermes GEO video, AI Mode lists me first when asked for the best GEO experts to follow in 2026.
One of my sites went from zero to more than 1,300 clicks a day.
Those are my results and not a promise, because nobody controls what an AI answer says.
Final Verdict
GEO tactics win on payoff, AEO tactics win on speed, and the shared tactics win overall.
My single best tactic is a real case study on every key page, and my single worst is keyword stuffing.
Start with the shared base, then lean towards whichever job matches the questions your buyers really ask.

A real case study with real numbers on every key page scores highest for GEO.
The AI can't write about a test only you ran.
What is the single best AEO tactic?
Putting the question in a heading and the direct answer in the first two lines scores highest.
It helps GEO too, which is why it tops the whole table.
Which tactics score lowest?
Keyword stuffing scores lowest, because the GEO paper found it didn't help.
