The Hermes agent robot is the Autonomous Lamp, a fully-assembled open-source desk robot from Autonomous that can run Hermes Agent as its brain through lampOS, and this review scores it feature by feature.

It has a camera, microphones, speakers, a light ring and a five-servo arm, and it sits on your desk like a lamp that turns to look at you when you speak.

On 24 October 2026, Autonomous's official Lamp page listed it at $999 for one unit, with free shipping.

Hermes is one of six supported agents, and the Lamp's own device file in the lampOS repo sets Hermes as the default.

I need to be upfront about one thing before the scores.

I covered the Lamp in my video using Autonomous's own footage, but I don't own one and I haven't tested it, so every score below is my read of the official spec sheet, the FAQ and the lampOS README, not a hands-on test.

Hermes Agent Robot Scores At A Glance

These are my scores out of 10, based on what Autonomous's page and the lampOS README say the Lamp does.

Feature Score My one-line verdict
Hardware and body 8/10 The five-servo arm, camera, mics and speakers cover everything an agent needs in a room.
Agent choice 9/10 Six supported agents with live switching is the most flexible part of the product.
Setup 8/10 The six-step app setup needs no code and starts on hosted AI straight away.
Skills 8/10 One markdown file per skill and an in-app skill writer make it easy to extend.
Personality 8/10 One SOUL.md file changes who it is on the next turn.
Safety 9/10 Limits are enforced by the OS below the model, which is the right design.
Local and private use 6/10 Local models work, but full offline use needs extra speech and vision services.
Openness 9/10 The OS is public, Apache-2.0 outside the hardware layer, and runs on other robots too.
Value 7/10 The $999 single-unit price is fair for a fully-assembled robot, but it's not an impulse buy.

My overall verdict is 4 out of 5 on paper, and I'll explain every score below.

What The Hermes Agent Robot Is

The Autonomous Lamp is a robotic desk lamp that Autonomous sells as "Your personal robot".

Autonomous makes the hardware and the software, and its website footer lists NYC, SF, Shenzhen and Saigon.

The software is lampOS, which the GitHub repo describes as "The open-source operating system for physical AI".

The README calls it "Physical AI Operating System" and says Autonomous is building the "Android" for physical AI agents.

Hermes Agent comes from Nous Research, and on the Lamp it becomes the brain that decides what to say and how to move.

Autonomous's announcement on X, which I showed in my video, said: "We just gave Hermes a body, one eye, and two ears."

The repo was created on 4 June 2026 and had about 490 stars on 24 October 2026.

Hardware Review: 8/10

The hardware is where the Lamp earns its price.

Part What the official page lists
Movement It uses 5 position-feedback servos.
Vision It has a wide-angle camera with face tracking and motion sensing.
Audio It has a built-in microphone array and built-in stereo speakers.
Compute It runs on an 8-core ARM64 CPU with 6 GB of RAM.
Connectivity It connects over Wi-Fi 6.
Power It takes 12V 5A DC.
Size It measures 7.87 ร— 7.87 ร— 18.43 inches.
Weight It weighs 6.6 lbs.
Warranty It comes with a 1-year warranty.
Room sensing It lists COโ‚‚, particles from PM1.0 to PM10, temperature and humidity sensors.

The page lists COโ‚‚ accuracy at ยฑ100 ppm and typical temperature accuracy at 0.45 ยฐC.

I took two points off for one reason, which is clarity.

One line of the page calls the air sensors "Lamp Pro's room sensors", so buyers need to check which model includes them.

Agent Choice Review: 9/10

This is the best thing about the product for me.

The README lists six supported agents, which are Hermes, Claude Code, Codex, OpenClaw, OpenCode and PicoClaw.

The spec sheet on the product page words it slightly differently, listing Claude Code, Codex, Hermes, OpenClaw, OpenCode and Pi, with "More joining."

All six sit behind one gateway, and the README says you can switch live from the web UI while the persona, memory and connectors move with you.

You can also skip the supported agents and use the physical APIs from your own scripts or agent, according to the product page.

The Lamp's device file names Hermes as the default, which is why people search for it as the Hermes agent robot.

Setup Review: 8/10

The README's quick start has six steps.

  1. You tap Add robot and then Lamp in the Autonomous app on iOS or Android.
  2. You pick your Wi-Fi network, and the app handles the keys and pairing.
  3. You speak, and the Lamp turns to look at you, lights its ring and answers.
  4. You install a skill from the Skill Store in one tap.
  5. You type what you want in the app, and it writes a new skill.
  6. You edit SOUL.md to give it a new character.

Autonomous's FAQ says the Lamp runs on its hosted AI right after setup, including the brain, the voice, face recognition and mood.

That's a smart default, because you get something working before you touch a single setting.

It loses two points because bringing your own agent is a second step after setup, and Autonomous says custom behaviours may need code and testing.

Skills Review: 8/10

A lampOS skill is one folder with one SKILL.md file, written in markdown the agent reads.

Hardware skills emit markers like [HW:/path:{json}], and the OS turns those into movement, light or sound.

Skills declare the capabilities they need, so they only install on robots that have the right parts.

The README lists two skills that stand out for operators.

The harness-use skill sends coding and research tasks to agents running in Autonomous's Harness app on a paired computer.

The computer-use skill lets the Lamp's agent use Mac apps through a paired Autonomous Buddy, which bundles Cua Driver.

The hardware layer exposes 111 HTTP endpoints, with live Swagger docs on the robot, according to the README.

Personality Review: 8/10

Personality lives in SOUL.md, which the README describes as "the self: who it is and how it talks".

Edit that file, and the README says the Lamp "is someone else on the next turn".

Autonomous's page adds a voice from a supported speech service, a name, a sense of humour and a signature greeting, gesture or light.

The README says the realtime voice layer supports Gemini Live, OpenAI Realtime, GPT-Live and a Pipecat pipeline.

It loses two points only because the voices depend on which supported speech service you connect.

Safety Review: 9/10

This is the score I'm most confident about, because it's a design decision you can read in the repo.

The README says the safety gate is "a pure function" of SAFETY.md, sitting below the engine and in every request path, with no model in the loop.

In plain words, Hermes can't talk its way past the limits.

Limit What the Lamp's SAFETY.md sets
Brightness It caps the daytime light at 120 on a 0 to 255 scale.
Quiet hours It dims the ring to a ceiling of 40 from 22:00 to 07:00.
Motion speed It caps joints at 120 degrees per second.
Stop It keeps stop and release always available, outside the agent's control.

The README also links to a safety doc that lists what the gate does not cover yet, which I respect.

It gets a 9 rather than a 10 because that list of gaps exists, and I'd read it before putting a Lamp near customers.

Local And Private Use Review: 6/10

This is the weakest score, and it's because of Autonomous's own honest wording.

The FAQ says local AI works with a compatible local model endpoint.

It then says fully local conversation also needs compatible speech and vision services on your own hardware.

It also says choosing a local model alone does not make the whole system offline.

The README adds that the OS runs on the robot, but model inference may use remote services, depending on your configuration.

So if privacy is your main reason to buy, plan for more setup than a single model download.

Openness Review: 9/10

The repo is public at github.com/autonomous-ai/lampOS.

The README says everything outside hal/ is Apache-2.0 and hal/ is GPL-3.0, kept that way so each top-level folder has one licence.

The OS also runs on Autonomous Intern and Hugging Face's Reachy Mini, and the README says any robot you can describe in four markdown files can run it.

Those four files are ROBOT.md, SOUL.md, SAFETY.md and SKILL.md.

That's a genuinely open design, and it means your skills aren't locked to one product.

Value Review: 7/10

The official page listed $999 for one Lamp with free shipping on 24 October 2026.

It also shows lower per-unit prices when you buy three or more, which helps schools and showrooms.

For a fully-assembled robot with a camera, five servos, sensors and an open OS, that price feels fair to me.

It's still a lot for someone who only wants a talking desk lamp, which is why I've scored it a 7.

Who Should Buy The Hermes Agent Robot?

Here's how I'd decide, based on the docs.

You are My verdict
A Hermes user who wants an agent in the room It's a strong fit, because Hermes is the default brain.
An agency building client experiences It's a strong fit, because Autonomous openly supports that use.
A teacher or robotics club It's a good fit, because a skill is one markdown file.
A researcher studying social robots It's a good fit, because you can change one part of the body or voice at a time.
Someone who needs fully offline AI It's a weaker fit until you've planned local speech and vision.
Someone who wants a cheap smart speaker It's the wrong fit, because you'd pay for a body you don't need.

My Final Verdict On The Hermes Agent Robot

My verdict is 4 out of 5, on paper.

The agent choice, the open OS and the safety design are the strongest parts of the product, based on what the docs show.

The local-only story and the room-sensor model wording are the two things I'd want clearer.

I'll update this review if I get a Lamp and test it myself, because a hands-on test is the only thing that would change these scores with confidence.
