Hermes Agent brew is a real thing, because brew install hermes-agent is a live formula in Homebrew core.
My verdict is that you should still use the official installer, which is curl -fsSL https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/install.sh | bash, because Nous Research lists Homebrew as an unsupported install method.
This page is the reference version, so it goes through every install route feature by feature and then scores them.
I read the formula file, the cask, brew info and the official Hermes docs on 12 October 2026, and I'll tell you plainly which parts I've run myself and which parts I've only read.
The Verdict On Hermes Agent Brew In 30 Seconds
- The Homebrew formula exists, it's popular and its correct name is
hermes-agent. - Nous Research lists brew installs as unsupported, so you're on your own if it breaks.
- The official installer is the route I use, and it's the route I recommend.
- The Hermes Desktop download from the Hermes website is the easiest route for beginners.
- The Homebrew cask is a convenience for people who already install apps with brew.
What Hermes Agent Brew Is
Hermes Agent is a free, open-source AI agent made by Nous Research.
It runs commands, uses tools, keeps memory between sessions and connects to chat apps.
Homebrew is the free package manager for macOS and Linux, and "brew" is its command.
"Hermes Agent brew" simply means installing the first with the second.
Homebrew lists two packages, and I confirmed both without installing either.
| Package | Type | What it installs | Version I saw |
|---|---|---|---|
hermes-agent |
Formula | The command-line agent, with the commands hermes, hermes-agent and hermes-acp |
0.21.6 |
hermes-desktop |
Cask | Hermes.app in your Applications folder |
0.21.2 |
The formula describes itself as a "self-improving AI agent that creates skills from experience", and it carries the MIT licence.
How I Scored Each Install Route
I want to be honest about my evidence before you read any scores.
My own Hermes install came from the official script, and hermes --version on my Mac reports "Install method: git".
I haven't installed the Homebrew formula or the cask on my machine.
For those two routes, I read the formula file, the cask definition, Homebrew's analytics and the official docs.
So these scores are my judgement from documented facts, and they aren't lab measurements.
I scored each route out of ten on four things.
- Support asks whether Nous Research stands behind the route.
- Ease asks how few steps it takes to get a working agent.
- Updates asks how quickly and safely new versions arrive.
- Clean removal asks how simple it is to uninstall without losing data by accident.

The Scores: Four Ways To Install Hermes Agent On A Mac
| Route | Support | Ease | Updates | Clean removal | Overall |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Official install script | 10 | 8 | 9 | 8 | 8.8 |
| Hermes Desktop download | 10 | 10 | 8 | 8 | 9.0 |
| Homebrew formula | 3 | 9 | 6 | 9 | 6.8 |
| Homebrew cask | 4 | 9 | 6 | 8 | 6.8 |
The desktop download scores highest overall because it's supported and needs no terminal.
The official script is my own pick, because I live in the terminal and want hermes update.
Both Homebrew routes lose most of their points on support, and that's the only reason they trail.
Feature By Feature: The Official Install Script
What it is: it's a one-line script from Nous Research for macOS, Linux and WSL2.
The command: it's the short block below.
curl -fsSL https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/install.sh | bash
source ~/.zshrc
hermes
What it needs: the docs list Git, curl, tar and a SHA-256 tool, and a Mac only lacks Git until you run xcode-select --install.
What it brings: the docs say it downloads its own pinned uv, and that Hermes's package manager provides pinned Python, Node.js, npm, ripgrep and FFmpeg.
Where it puts things: the code goes in ~/.hermes/hermes-agent/, the command is a wrapper at ~/.local/bin/hermes and your data sits in ~/.hermes/.
What else it installs: it adds the browser tools and the computer-use driver by default, and the flags --skip-browser and --skip-computer-use leave them out.
Support status: it's Tier 1 on Apple Silicon Macs, Linux and WSL2.
My verdict: this is the best route for anyone comfortable with a terminal.
Feature By Feature: The Hermes Agent Brew Formula
What it is: it's a formula in Homebrew core that builds Hermes Agent from the tagged release on GitHub.
The command: it's the short block below.
brew update
brew install hermes-agent
What it needs: you need Homebrew, which you get from brew.sh.
What it brings: the formula depends on Python 3.14, Node, ripgrep, libheif and several Python libraries, and Homebrew installs those for you.
What it adds: it generates shell completions, and it keeps extra packages Hermes installs later inside ~/.hermes, so a brew upgrade doesn't wipe them.
What it leaves optional: the formula's own note says voice and text-to-speech conversion optionally uses FFmpeg, which is brew install ffmpeg.
How popular it is: Homebrew's analytics showed roughly 2,400 installs in the previous 30 days, alongside 8 build errors.
Support status: the official platform support page lists "installs via brew" as unsupported.
My verdict: it's a tidy package with a real support gap, so I'd keep it to test machines.
Feature By Feature: The Hermes Desktop Cask
What it is: it's a Homebrew cask that installs the Hermes desktop app.
The command: it's the short block below.
brew install --cask hermes-desktop
What it installs: it places Hermes.app in your Applications folder, using the Hermes setup download hosted by Nous Research.
What the docs say about that download: the official docs describe the Hermes-Setup installer as a bootstrap that downloads a source installation and builds the desktop app.
Platform limits: the docs say the macOS installer is Apple Silicon only.
Removal: brew uninstall --cask hermes-desktop removes the app, and the cask's deeper clean-up list targets app caches and preferences.
My verdict: it's convenient, but downloading the app from the Hermes website gets you the same thing from the source.

Feature By Feature: The Hermes Desktop Download
What it is: it's the desktop package from the Hermes website.
How you install it: you open the DMG and copy Hermes into Applications.
What it brings: the docs say bundled packages contain the agent, Python, supported dependencies and pre-built interfaces, so the first launch doesn't build anything.
How it updates: the docs say the macOS bundled app updates through the Update control inside the app.
My verdict: this is the best route for anyone who doesn't want a terminal.
The Name Trap: Hermes, Hermit And Hermes Agent
The naming is messy, so here's a quick reference.
| Name | What it really is | Do you want it? |
|---|---|---|
hermes-agent |
The Homebrew formula for Hermes Agent | Yes, if you choose the brew route. |
hermes-desktop |
The Homebrew cask for the Hermes app | Only if you want the app through brew. |
hermes |
Not a Homebrew formula at all | No, the command fails. |
hermit |
A project-tool manager from Cash App, which brew suggests instead | No, it's unrelated. |
| Hermes, the JavaScript engine | A separate project from Meta | No, it's unrelated. |
You can check the real names safely with brew search hermes, which only reads the catalogue.
Setup After Install: Hermes Setup
Every route ends at the same wizard.
hermes setup
The wizard has sections for the model, text-to-speech, the terminal backend, the gateway, the tools, telemetry and the agent.
You can run one section alone, such as hermes setup model.
The docs call hermes setup --portal the fastest path, because it logs you in to Nous Portal and picks a model in one go.
After that, hermes doctor checks your configuration and dependencies.
My best Hermes Agent setup ranking scores six full stacks you can build once the wizard is done.
Updating And Uninstalling, Route By Route
| Route | Update | Uninstall |
|---|---|---|
| Official install script | hermes update |
hermes uninstall, after hermes uninstall --dry-run |
| Hermes Desktop download | The Update control in the app | Quit Hermes and move the app to the Bin |
| Homebrew formula | brew upgrade hermes-agent |
brew uninstall hermes-agent |
| Homebrew cask | brew upgrade --cask hermes-desktop |
brew uninstall --cask hermes-desktop |
The docs say hermes update is for a managed source checkout and doesn't rewrite package-owned files.
That's why a brew build should be updated with brew.
On the official route, hermes update --check shows whether a new release exists without installing it.
The official uninstaller has three modes worth knowing.
- The default mode can keep your configuration and data.
- The
--fullmode removes your configuration and data as well. - The
--datamode removes only your data and leaves the program alone.
All three are destructive, so run hermes backup first.
My Hermes Agent backup walkthrough covers that command in full.
Apple Silicon Versus Intel
| Question | Apple Silicon | Intel Mac |
|---|---|---|
| Is it in the official Tier 1 table? | Yes | No |
| Does the desktop installer run? | Yes | The docs say it reports "not supported on this Mac". |
| Does the Homebrew formula list a pre-built bottle? | Yes, for three recent macOS versions | No |
| Where does Homebrew live? | /opt/homebrew |
/usr/local |
The platform page says an Intel Mac can install the command-line version and run hermes desktop from there.
I'd treat Intel as possible but second class.
Common Errors, Ranked By How Often I'd Expect Them
hermes: command not foundusually means your shell hasn't reloaded, andsource ~/.zshrcfixes it.- "No available formula with the name hermes" means you need the full name, which is
hermes-agent. - The wrong version running means two installs exist, and
which -a hermesshows both. - "API key not set" means no model is connected, and
hermes modelfixes it. - Odd settings after an update are fixed with
hermes config checkand thenhermes config migrate.
If Homebrew's own commands aren't found after a fresh Homebrew install, run eval "$(/opt/homebrew/bin/brew shellenv)" on Apple Silicon.
Linux And WSL
Homebrew runs on Linux too, and the formula ships Linux bottles for ARM and x86 machines.
The official script is Tier 1 on Linux and WSL2, so I'd use that on any server.
Windows gets a separate official PowerShell installer.
If you're deciding where Hermes should run its commands, my Hermes Agent backend reference compares the options.
Who Should Use Which Route
| You are | Use this | Why |
|---|---|---|
| New to all of this | Hermes Desktop download | It installs like any app. |
| A terminal user on Apple Silicon | Official install script | It's supported and updates with one command. |
| A Homebrew purist on a test machine | brew install hermes-agent |
It fits your existing workflow. |
| Running a server | Official install script | Linux and WSL2 are Tier 1 for it. |
| On an Intel Mac | Official install script | Neither the desktop installer nor a brew bottle targets Intel. |
