Grok Bot Windows earns an 8/10 from me: it covers both x64 and Arm64 PCs, keeps the heavy work in the cloud and has picked up a steady run of Windows fixes, but it gives IT almost no say over updates.
The ratings below are my editorial judgement from xAI's own docs and the Grok Bot changelog, not from benchmarks.
Every claim links to the page it came from, starting with the Get Started guide.

The verdict in short
Buy into it if your desk runs Windows and you want Bots that work while your PC sleeps.
The app is a client: the deployment docs say each member's Bots run on a cloud-hosted Linux machine.
That design is the app's biggest strength and the reason most limits below are about control, not capability.
Skip it if you need an MSI, a model picker or a way for IT to freeze updates.
Getting it is easy: the Download Grok Bot row on the Cursor dashboard, x.ai/bot and cursor.com/download/bot all lead to the same installers.
Grok Bot Windows scorecard
| Criterion | Score /10 | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware coverage | 9 | Separate Setup .exe builds for x64 and Arm64. |
| Getting the installer | 9 | Three official routes: dashboard row, x.ai/bot and cursor.com/download/bot. |
| Install footprint | 8 | Per-user install under the profile, silent with /S. |
| Local safety controls | 9 | Execution on this computer asks every time by default; Never allow is one click. |
| Windows polish | 8 | Desktop notifications, hardware acceleration and paste fixes all landed in October releases. |
| Update control | 5 | No policy, installer option or dashboard switch turns off updates. |
| Enterprise packaging | 6 | Setup .exe only, no MSI; wrap it yourself. |
| Sign-in on the Bot's computer | 7 | Hardware keys work; Windows Hello and passkeys don't. |
Average those and you land near 7.6; I round the overall up to 8 because the weak scores hit IT teams, not solo users.
Strength: x64 and Arm64 both get a native build
xAI lists Windows on x64 and Arm64 in the get-started guide, the FAQ and the deployment page.
The deployment page names separate release feeds, win32-x64-user and win32-arm64-user, so each architecture gets its own installer rather than an emulated one.
That's the right call for the growing number of Arm Windows laptops.
Strength: the cloud does the heavy lifting
Because Bots run on the hosted computer, your PC's specs barely matter for the work itself.
The docs don't publish a minimum spec for the desktop app, and the architecture means they don't really need one.
Close the lid and the job keeps going in the cloud.
The flip side is that your own files stay local: files that exist only on your Windows machine aren't part of the Bot computer's recovery, so you still need your own backups.

Strength: it won't touch your PC unless you say so
Execution on this computer defaults to Ask every time.
The approvals docs recommend Never allow unless a Bot needs your local files, and a team admin can cap the setting for everyone.
The first-run card is honest about scope, too: it asks whether to allow Grok Bot and all Bots to run commands on your local computer.
That's a safer default than most desktop agents ship with.
Strength: October was a big month for Windows fixes
- v0.67.0, 2 Oct: Use hardware acceleration on by default, as on Mac.
- v0.71.2, 14 Oct: Bot replies and questions notify you on the Windows PC instead of your phone while you're using it.
- 0.70.2 onward: pasted list text stays inline, and copied chat keeps non-English characters and curly quotes.
- 0.75.2 onward: an installed 1Password app gets noticed and offered as a connection.
Older lines still matter: v0.59.0 installs a downloaded update when you quit, and v0.20.0 added Ctrl+D dictation.
A steady cadence like that is a good sign for a young desktop app.
The notification change is the one I'd value most: the settings docs say finished replies skip your phone while you're using the PC, and a question only reaches the phone about three minutes later if you haven't opened that Bot.
For the PC to count as active, Grok Bot must be open and signed in, the screen unlocked, the machine recently used, and Windows must allow its banners.
Strength: 1Password logins without pasting passwords
Install 1Password on the PC and, in builds from 0.75.2 on, the Bot spots it and offers the connection itself.
The computer and apps docs describe the flow: a Review in 1Password card opens the desktop app, you pick the exact logins to share, and 1Password fills them in the Bot's browser.
The Bot never sees the values, and 1Password doesn't fill payment cards.
Version 8.12.42 of 1Password is the minimum, only personal and Family accounts qualify, and the rollout is gradual, which is why this isn't a 10.
Limit: IT can't silence the updater
The deployment FAQ is blunt: on Windows there's no admin control to turn off automatic updates.
Members can switch off Automatic Updates so installs wait for Restart to Update, but the app still checks and offers new versions.
Old builds also stop working: the app covers its window with Update required once a build loses support.
The troubleshooting guide puts that at more than 14 days old with a newer version out, while the deployment page says the limits are set remotely and not published.
Plan for a short update cycle either way.
To its credit, the update itself is painless: choose Update, then Restart to update, and your Bots keep working in the cloud the whole time.
Automatic installs hold off until you step away: a locked screen or running screensaver, ten idle minutes, and no Bot work in progress.
Limit: Setup .exe only
There's no MSI.
The deployment FAQ tells admins to wrap the .exe in their management tool's package format if the tool needs one.
Intune and Configuration Manager both get a mention, along with the silent switch Grok_Bot_{version}_Setup.exe /S.
The catch is context: the installer goes into %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs per user, so it must deploy in user context, not as SYSTEM.
Admins used to machine-wide installs will need to adjust their packages.
The release feed helps here: win32-x64-user and win32-arm64-user return a version and a downloadUrl, and each release keeps a versioned URL you can pin.
Pin the build you tested and store it in your own software repository, as the deployment page advises.
Limit: Windows Hello stays on your PC
Neither Windows Hello nor a passkey stored on your laptop works on the Bot's computer.
Hardware security keys do: Use hardware security keys is on by default on Windows and asks for approval on every use.
Work apps behind Okta or other SSO mean taking over the Bot's computer and signing in with a method your company allows there.
It works, but it's a step more than a passwordless Windows user expects.
Limit: you don't choose the model
The FAQ says Grok Bot picks the backend model for each task and there's no model picker.
For most users that's fine.
For power users who like to steer models, it's a real gap.
The FAQ adds that the app doesn't show which model handled a request, and usage is recorded as Grok Bot usage rather than by model name.

Windows app versus the Mac app
| Point | Windows | Mac |
|---|---|---|
| Architectures | x64, Arm64 | Apple silicon, Intel |
| Installer | Setup .exe | .dmg |
| Hardware acceleration | On by default since v0.67.0 | On by default |
| Desktop notifications instead of phone | Yes, since v0.71.2 | Yes, since v0.71.2 |
| Dictation shortcut | Ctrl+D | โD |
The two are close to parity; my full take on the Apple side is in the Grok Bot Mac verdict.
Who should use Grok Bot on Windows
- Solo operators and small teams on Premium, Super or Ultra who live on Windows.
- Owners of Arm64 laptops who want a native build.
- Teams that already sign in with SSO and keep logins in 1Password.
- Anyone who wants an agent that keeps working with the PC switched off.
How much setup effort it takes
For one person, setup is short: download, run the Setup .exe, sign in with a Cursor account, and the app creates a first Bot called Grok Bot.
There's no separate Grok Bot password to manage, and company SSO works as normal.
For a fleet, the deployment page lists an eight-step rollout checklist, from moving off Privacy Mode (Legacy) to piloting the installer and planning an update cadence.
That's more process than most desktop apps ask for, but every step is documented, which I rate well.
Who should skip it
- Anyone on the Plus plan, which doesn't include Grok Bot, per the subscription docs.
- Companies stuck on Privacy Mode (Legacy), which blocks Grok Bot entirely.
- IT teams that must freeze desktop versions for months.
- Users who need to pick the AI model behind every task.
Final verdict: 8/10
Grok Bot on Windows is a solid, safe desktop client for a cloud agent, with real Arm64 support and an October run of Windows-specific fixes.
The weak points are all about control: no MSI, no admin switch for updates, no model choice.
For a solo user or a small team, those barely register.
For a locked-down enterprise fleet, budget time for packaging and a fast update rhythm.
