The Grok Bot free trial earns a 6.4 out of 10 from me: safe on charges, short on clarity, and now contradicted by its own release notes.

I scored it from the official docs and changelog, criterion by criterion, so you can see where each point comes from.

The ratings are my editorial judgement from those sources, read on 3 November 2026.

The FAQ entry on the trial is the core source, backed by the mobile billing section and the changelog.

The verdict in one line

Take it if your screen offers it, spend it on small tasks, and never confuse it with the App Store trial.

The usage-credit trial cannot bill you, which is its best feature.

Its weak spots are a credit that drains unpredictably, a cancel button that is permanent, and a 27 October release that says the trial offer has been replaced.

How I scored it

Each criterion asks one question a buyer actually has, such as "can this bill me?" or "can I undo it?".

I answered each question from the FAQ, the mobile docs, the referral page and the changelog.

A 10 means the docs answer it fully in the buyer's favour.

A low score means the answer is unclear, limiting, or different on another platform.

I gave every criterion equal weight and averaged them.

The scorecard

CriterionScore /10Why
Protection from surprise charges9The FAQ says the trial never turns into a paid plan, and cancelling has no charge.
Ease of starting7One Start Trial button on the access screen, but only some accounts get it.
Credit predictability5It drains by agent steps and tokens, and one big task can use all of it.
Length of the test window6A 7-day window applies on top of the credit.
Cancel flexibility5Cancel Trial removes the remaining credit and the trial cannot be restarted.
Consistency across platforms4The App Store trial is separate and converts, and Android has no in-app trial.
Team options8Enterprise admins can start a team trial and track the days left.
Clarity of the current offer7The docs and v0.78.1 disagree, though both are public and easy to check.

Averaged, that lands at 6.4.

No benchmarks went into these numbers; each line is a reading of what the docs promise.

What you are actually being offered

Strip away the button and the trial is two limits stacked together.

The first is a usage credit.

The second is a 7-day window, which closes whether or not you have spent the credit.

Some accounts see Start Trial on the access screen; others do not, and the FAQ does not say who qualifies.

That gap alone costs it a point on ease of starting.

Strengths

Strength: it cannot quietly bill you

The referral trial on the same docs site asks for a card up front.

This one, per the FAQ, never turns into a paid plan.

Cancelling is free as well.

If you move to a paid plan or a Teams seat mid-trial, the trial simply ends on its own.

That is why the charge-protection line scores a 9, the highest on the card.

Strength: team trials are handled properly

The changelog shows Enterprise admins gained a team trial switch on the dashboard in v0.33.0, with Bot settings showing the end date.

v0.37.0 then put the days remaining on the dashboard Overview.

For a company that wants one controlled test, that is a sensible setup.

Limits

Limit: the credit is hard to budget

The FAQ is honest that the meter counts agent steps and tokens, not messages.

That is fair to xAI but awkward for a tester.

You cannot look at a task and know its cost before it runs.

The advice in the docs is to start small, scope tightly and check usage on the plan screen before anything large.

Used credit does not come back, so one runaway job can end your test early.

Hence the 5 for predictability.

Limit: Cancel Trial is a one-way door

Cancel Trial sits in Settings โ†’ Usage & Billing on desktop and Settings โ†’ Usage on phones, on free-plan accounts.

Pressing it deletes the credit you had left.

The trial is also gone for good, with no restart.

Since the trial cannot bill you anyway, I struggle to see a reason to press it on a free plan.

The option exists, it is clearly labelled, and it is easy to regret.

Limit: three trials share one name

This is where the experience scores worst.

  • Usage-credit trial: claimed on web or desktop, never converts.
  • App Store trial: run by Apple, converts to a paid Apple subscription unless cancelled in Apple ID โ†’ Subscriptions.
  • Referral trial: a 2-week free trial of Premium from a friend's link, card required, with a reminder 7 days before the first charge, per the referral docs.

Android adds a fourth state: no in-app trial at all.

A buyer reading "free trial" in one place can easily assume the rules from another.

The mobile docs do point back to the FAQ, and my Grok Bot iOS review covers the iPhone side in more depth.

Limit: the docs and the release notes disagree

Release v0.78.1 on 27 October says Grok Bot now offers Get Grok Bot with a unified plan, plus See Unified Plans, where it used to offer a free trial.

The FAQ still described Start Trial and Cancel Trial on 3 November.

I do not mark this down hard, because both sources are public and dated.

But it means nobody can promise you a trial today without seeing your screen.

Check your own access screen before you plan anything around it.

Where every trial setting lives

Link an existing Grok planLink Grok Account on phones, Get Access with Grok on desktop

Everything sits in a sensible place, which is why ease of starting keeps a 7 despite the eligibility gap.

Refunds: who handles what

The usage-credit trial has nothing to refund, since it never bills.

For store purchases, the FAQ says Apple or Google handles refunds.

The mobile docs add that Cursor cannot cancel or refund an in-app plan.

So an App Store trial that converts is an Apple matter from start to finish.

That split is clear in the docs, but it is one more reason the platform-consistency score stays at 4.

The overlooked alternative: you may already have access

Before you score the trial at all, check whether you need it.

Per the setup docs, people whose access comes from SuperGrok or X Premium+ link that plan to their Cursor account instead.

The FAQ adds that Get Access with Grok appears only when linking would raise your usage.

If you already hold one of those, linking beats a 7-day trial on every criterion in my table.

How it compares with the paid plans

The X Subscription page puts Grok Bot on Premium, Super and Ultra, and leaves it off Plus.

Paid usage comes from a weekly shared pool across Grok, Grok Bot and Cursor, with larger allowances on Super and Ultra.

Compared with that, the trial is a short taste rather than a working allowance.

It is enough to judge one workflow, not enough to judge a whole team setup.

What a 6.4 means in practice

A score in the sixes is not a warning to stay away.

It means the offer is fine for a careful buyer and awkward for a careless one.

The careful buyer reads the access screen, runs small jobs and never touches Cancel Trial.

The careless buyer runs one sprawling task, starts an Apple trial on the side and forgets the date.

Same trial, very different week.

What would push the score higher

  • A clear statement in the docs of which accounts get Start Trial.
  • A usage estimate before a task runs, so the credit is easier to budget.
  • One matching answer in the FAQ and the changelog about whether the trial is still offered.

Fix those three and this would sit near an 8.

The best way to use the 7 days

My advice from the scorecard is short.

Pick one job you repeat every week and run it two or three times with tighter briefs.

Check Usage & Billing after each run so the weak predictability score stops mattering.

Leave Cancel Trial alone, and keep any phone trial on a calendar reminder.

Who should take the trial

  • Solo operators with one clear, repeatable task to test.
  • Teams on Cursor Enterprise whose admin can run one controlled trial.
  • Anyone who wants to try Grok Bot with zero billing exposure.

Who should skip it or wait

  • People planning one big research or build job, which can drain the whole credit.
  • Android users hoping for an in-app trial, which does not exist.
  • Anyone tempted to start the App Store trial and forget about it.

Final verdict

A 6.4 out of 10 is a pass with conditions.

The trial is safe, free to walk away from, and properly built for Enterprise teams.

It loses points for an unpredictable credit, a permanent cancel, confusing sibling trials and a live conflict with v0.78.1.

Claim it if you see it, keep the tasks small, and decide by day 7.
