Hermes Agent SuperGrok earns a 7.5 out of 10 from me: the integration is one of the cleanest in Hermes, but xAI's access gating can block it after you've logged in.

I rated it on seven criteria, using only the official Hermes docs, the release notes and the GitHub issue tracker.

Here's the scorecard, the reasoning behind every number, and who should and shouldn't use it.

The short version: it scores high on everything Hermes controls, and low on the one thing xAI controls.

What Was Rated

The product here is the xai-oauth provider in Hermes Agent.

The Hermes OAuth guide names it "xAI Grok OAuth (SuperGrok / X Premium+)".

It signs Hermes in with your SuperGrok subscription, or X Premium+ on a linked X account, using an OAuth 2.0 device-code login against accounts.x.ai.

No XAI_API_KEY is used for this provider.

It shipped in Hermes v0.14.0 on 16 May 2026, at the top of that release's highlights.

Version 0.15.0 followed on 28 May 2026 with the X Premium+ note and an xAI web search plugin that reuses the same login.

Two releases in 12 days tells me Nous Research is still actively working on it.

I judged the product as documented on 31 October 2026.

Setup Speed: 9/10

The quick start is four moves.

Run hermes model, choose the provider, approve the code at accounts.x.ai, pick a model.

Credentials land in ~/.hermes/auth.json and refresh automatically before they expire.

It loses one point because the provider list holds two xAI entries, and picking the API-key one by mistake is easy.

For comparison, most API-key providers in Hermes need a key in ~/.hermes/.env before you can do anything.

Here, nothing has to be copied or pasted at all.

Power users can skip the menus too, with hermes config set model.provider xai-oauth and four aliases that all resolve to the same provider.

Remote And Headless Login: 9/10

This is where it beats most OAuth setups.

On SSH, containers, Cloud Shell, Codespaces or EC2 Instance Connect, hermes auth add xai-oauth --no-browser prints a URL and a user code.

You approve it from any browser and Hermes polls until xAI confirms.

The web dashboard and desktop app follow the same device-code pattern.

That's a big deal for anyone running agents on a rented server, where browser-based logins usually need port forwarding.

The guide says no SSH tunnel or local callback listener is required.

It drops a point only because the providers page tells a different story, covered under Documentation.

Tool Coverage: 8/10

One login reaches further than chat.

The guide says the same bearer token is reused for TTS, image generation, video generation and transcription.

X Search joins them too, and switches itself on once xAI credentials exist.

Two things hold the score back.

Video generation ships disabled and needs switching on in hermes tools.

And the Hermes TTS page lists xAI TTS against XAI_API_KEY, which muddies the "one login covers all four" line.

Model Choice: 8/10

The OAuth guide's model table is wide.

Chat options are grok-4.6 (the default), grok-build-0.1 for coding, grok-4.3, and three grok-4.20-0309 variants: reasoning, non-reasoning and multi-agent.

Image options are grok-imagine-image, grok-imagine-image-2.0 and grok-imagine-image-quality.

Video options are grok-imagine-video and grok-imagine-video-1.5-preview.

The v0.14.0 notes add that grok-4.3 got a 1M token context window.

The catalog also refreshes from the models.dev cache, so new xAI models appear without a Hermes update.

It isn't a 9 because the table gives little guidance on which chat model suits which job.

Beyond labels like "coding-oriented" and "previous generation", you're left to test them yourself.

Access Reliability: 5/10

This is the score that drags the total down.

The OAuth guide carries a warning box: xAI runs its own allowlist on the OAuth API, and plain SuperGrok plans have bounced off it with a 403.

Issue #26847 documents it: OAuth login and token storage work, then inference fails with a permission error from xAI.

The reporter's own diagnosis is that the fault sits on xAI's backend, not in Hermes.

Hermes' answer is a fallback: an xAI key saved as XAI_API_KEY in ~/.hermes/.env, with the provider switched to xAI.

That works, but it means a subscription-only plan can't be guaranteed.

Half marks feels right.

The issue is now closed on GitHub, but the OAuth guide still carries the warning, so I'm scoring what the docs say today.

If xAI lifts the gating for good, this criterion jumps and the overall score goes with it.

Error Handling: 8/10

Hermes handles failure well.

It refreshes the token before each session and again on a 401.

If the refresh is terminal, such as invalid_grant or a revoked grant, it quarantines the dead token and shows one "re-authentication required" message.

Timeouts and missing credentials each get a named error and a one-line fix.

It isn't a 10 because the 403 still looks like a login problem to a new user, even though it isn't one.

The guide does say plainly that re-running hermes model won't help, which saves wasted time.

There's also hermes doctor, which shows the state of every auth provider in one place.

Documentation: 7/10

The OAuth guide is detailed, with an overview table, config reference, aliases and six troubleshooting entries.

The providers page backs it up with a subscription table that admits inference quota is "not currently documented".

But the two pages clash on one point.

The OAuth guide says remote xAI logins need no SSH tunnel.

The providers page tells remote users to see the OAuth-over-SSH guide "for the required ssh -L tunnel".

The device-code design supports the OAuth guide's version, so follow that one.

How It Compares With The API-Key Route

Hermes offers two xAI providers, and the verdict depends on which one you mean.

The xai provider uses XAI_API_KEY and the same Responses API transport.

It skips the tier check that causes the 403.

But it's billed by xAI per token, separate from any subscription.

The xai-oauth provider uses the subscription you already have, with no key to manage.

It wins on convenience and loses on certainty.

Both get the automatic prompt caching that Hermes switches on for any x.ai endpoint.

Both read the same live model catalog.

So the choice comes down to one question: can you live with a possible 403?

If yes, take OAuth; if no, take the key.

Strengths

  • One-command setup with a model picker that pins the default at the top.
  • A true headless login built on device codes.
  • A single token feeding several xAI tools.
  • Automatic prompt caching on any x.ai endpoint through the x-grok-conv-id header.
  • A hermes migrate xai command that rewrites configs pointing at retired models, as a dry run by default.

Limits

  • Access can fail with HTTP 403 for standard SuperGrok subscribers, which no Hermes setting fixes.
  • Inference quota on the subscription isn't documented.
  • Voice may still need an API key.
  • Two official pages disagree on remote logins.

Who Should Use It, And Who Shouldn't

Use it if you already have SuperGrok or X Premium+ and want Grok behind real agent tools.

Use it if you run agents on servers and hate tunneling for OAuth.

Use it if your work leans on X, since x_search comes along with the login.

Use it if you want image and video generation from the same account you chat with.

Use it if you run other coding tools, because the v0.14.0 hermes proxy turns an OAuth login like SuperGrok into a local OpenAI-compatible endpoint.

Now the other side.

Skip the OAuth route if your workflow can't tolerate a sudden 403.

Go straight to the API-key provider instead.

Skip it if you need written guarantees on inference quota, because the docs don't give one.

Skip it if your only use is text-to-speech, since the TTS page points to an API key anyway.

Final Verdict

Hermes Agent SuperGrok is a strong 7.5 out of 10.

Everything Hermes owns is close to best in class: the login, the tool reuse, the errors.

The weak spot is xAI's gating, and the docs are upfront about it.

Install it, send one test message, and keep the XAI_API_KEY fallback ready.

If that first message comes back clean, you've got one of the smoothest model logins in any open-source agent.

If it comes back with a 403, you've lost five minutes, not a day.

Either outcome tells you which provider to build on, so run the test before anything else.

FAQ: Hermes Agent SuperGrok Verdict

What score does Hermes Agent SuperGrok get?

7.5 out of 10 overall. It scores 8 or 9 on setup, remote login, tools, models and error handling, and 5 on access reliability.

Why is access reliability rated so low?

Because xAI's backend has rejected standard SuperGrok subscribers with HTTP 403 after a successful login. The fix is an API key, which defeats the point of a subscription-only setup.

Is the 403 a bug in Hermes?

The OAuth guide and issue 26847 both point to xAI's side. Hermes completes the login correctly, then xAI's inference endpoint refuses the call.

Which two docs pages disagree?

The OAuth guide says remote xAI logins need no SSH tunnel. The providers page points remote users to a required ssh -L tunnel.

Who should skip the OAuth route?

Anyone who can't afford a sudden 403. Start on the xai provider with XAI_API_KEY instead.
