Hermes Agent for business earns an 8.1 out of 10 from me as a small-business assistant, scored use case by use case from the official documentation.
It's strongest at recurring reports, locked-down access and safe unattended runs.
It's weakest where setup grows heavy: scanned paperwork, multi-agent boards and anything that needs the Desktop app.

The Verdict In One Paragraph
Buy into Hermes if you can name one job that repeats every week and you have someone who's comfortable with a terminal.
Skip it if you want a hosted app you sign into and forget.
The ratings below are my editorial judgement from reading the Hermes Agent docs, not a lab benchmark.
Each score has a one-line reason so you can disagree with it on the facts.
The Scorecard
| Use case | Score | Why, from the docs |
|---|---|---|
| Scheduled reports (cron) | 9/10 | Plain-English schedules, skills attached, delivery to almost any chat or inbox. |
| Inbox assistant (email gateway) | 8/10 | Works with any IMAP/SMTP provider; needs a dedicated account, an app password and an authserv pin. |
| Team chat gateways | 8/10 | One gateway covers Slack, Teams, Telegram, WhatsApp and more, with per-channel models. |
| Document reading | 7/10 | Word and Excel read natively; scanned PDFs need extra OCR work. |
| Skills | 9/10 | A markdown file becomes a slash command and can ride along on any cron job. |
| Kanban board + delegation | 7/10 | Durable and restart-proof, but the reference page is long and the model takes learning. |
| Bot Mode | 7/10 | A clean roster of role Bots, but it lives in the Desktop app. |
| Credential vault | 8/10 | Passwords never reach the model; card fills always ask a person. |
| Access control | 9/10 | Closed by default, with allowlists and expiring pairing codes. |
| Unattended safety | 9/10 | Cron, one-shot and webhook sessions block dangerous commands by default. |
The average of those ten scores is 8.1.
Each score weighs four things: how much setup a small team faces, how safe the defaults are, how clearly the docs explain the feature, and how often a typical small business would use it.
A 9 means a non-specialist could set it up from the docs and leave it running.
A 7 means it works well but asks for more config, more reading or a specific app.
Hermes is MIT-licensed, and the version I read the docs against is v0.22.7 from 3 November 2026.
Scheduled Reports: 9/10
This is the use case I'd start any small business on.
Take a bakery that wants yesterday's online orders checked against the morning bake list.
- The owner writes: "Every morning at 6am, compare the orders export with today's bake list and flag anything we can't cover."
- Hermes turns that into a scheduled job through its cron tool.
- At 6am the job opens both files in a fresh session.
- The short list lands in the Slack channel or inbox the owner picked.
- On a morning with nothing to flag, the job can answer
[SILENT]and send nothing.
The cron reference lists one-shot and recurring jobs, attached skills, webhook triggers and a no-agent mode that runs a script with no AI call.
A job can pin its own model, or follow a cron.model default so changing your chat model doesn't move your reports.
It loses a point because the gateway has to be running for anything to fire.
Our separate Hermes cron job verdict scores the scheduler on its own in much more depth.

Inbox Assistant: 8/10
A dog-grooming salon can give its manager an agent address to email questions to, and get answers back in-thread.
Setup is plain IMAP and SMTP, so it works with Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo or Fastmail.
The email docs are firm on safety: a dedicated email account, never your personal one, and an app password when two-factor sign-in is on.
- The salon opens a fresh mailbox for the agent and turns on IMAP.
- It adds the app password and the manager's address to the allowlist in
~/.hermes/.env. - The manager emails a question with a supplier PDF attached.
- The gateway, polling every 15 seconds by default, picks it up, and the agent reads the attachment.
- The reply goes back in the same thread.
Unknown senders are ignored by default, which is the right call for a business address.
The lost points are for friction: EMAIL_AUTHSERV_ID must match your mail server's header exactly, or every message needing a checked sender is dropped.
Team Chat Gateways: 8/10
A ten-person agency on Microsoft Teams can reach the same agent its freelancers reach on Slack.
The messaging gateway is one background process for 20-plus platforms, and it also runs the cron scheduler.
In Slack, the agent answers every DM but only answers in a channel when someone @mentions it, then follows that thread.
Platform allowlists such as SLACK_ALLOWED_USERS and TEAMS_ALLOWED_USERS decide who gets a reply at all.
channel_overrides let one channel use a different model and system prompt from another, all on one gateway.
Feature support varies by platform; the docs' comparison table shows Teams without voice or file support, for example.
Document Reading: 7/10
An accountant's agent opens .docx, .xlsx and SQLite files with built-in code, and PDFs or older Office files through a converter installed on first use.
The extraction page is honest about the weak spot: PDFs are read by text layer only.
Scanned statements come back empty, and Hermes flags the missing page ranges so you can render a few pages for vision or run bulk OCR with a skill.
Files over 50 MB are refused, and the optional converter only installs where lazy installs are allowed in config.
Useful, but anyone with a cabinet of scanned paper should plan for the extra step.
Skills: 9/10
Skills turn a firm's own checklist into something the agent repeats exactly.
A skill is a SKILL.md file with a short header, dropped into ~/.hermes/skills/; no registration step.
Every installed skill becomes a slash command, and the agent can offer to save a method it just worked out.
Skills load only when needed, so a long library doesn't fill every chat's context.
The skills guide is one of the clearest pages in the docs.
Kanban Board And Delegation: 7/10
For an agency, the board is powerful: every task is a row in a SQLite database, every handoff is visible, and workers survive restarts.
Named profiles pick up cards, humans comment or unblock at any point, and tenants keep clients apart on one board.
- The agency owner runs
hermes kanban initonce. - She creates a research card for the researcher profile and a drafting card linked behind it.
- The dispatcher in the gateway spawns the researcher, which reads its card and does the work.
- When research is done, the drafting card moves to ready and the writer picks it up.
- She reviews the draft and comments on the card if it needs changes.
Delegation covers the short jobs: delegate_task spawns helper agents with fresh context and only their summaries come back, ten at once by default.
It scores lower because the Kanban reference is long, and a two-person business may never need it.
Bot Mode: 7/10
Bot Mode turns profiles into a roster of named Bots, each with its own role, model, memory, skills and recurring Routines.
For a shop owner who wants a "Stock" Bot and a "Socials" Bot, that's a tidy way to keep jobs apart.
Routines are plain cron jobs underneath, so nothing is hidden.
Each Bot keeps one permanent chat, so a shop owner clicks the Bot and is back in the same conversation.
It loses points because it ships in the Desktop app, so server-only setups use profiles from the terminal instead.
Credential Vault: 8/10
When an agent needs a supplier portal, the vault asks for the login once in a masked prompt and fills it into the page.
The password never enters the model's context through Hermes, per the docs.
Two-factor codes can be generated automatically from a saved setup key, and 1Password or Bitwarden logins are picked up if their command-line tools are signed in.
Every card fill needs a person's approval, and headless sessions can't approve, so they're refused.
A point off because the default key file travels with backups unless you move it to the system keychain.
Access Control And Unattended Safety: 9/10 Each
Access starts closed: the security page says that with no allowlist set, all users are denied.
New staff can pair by DM: they get an 8-character code, you approve it, and you can revoke it later.
Unattended runs are just as strict: cron_mode, single_query_mode and unattended_mode all default to deny for dangerous commands.
A hardline blocklist sits below everything, so even yolo mode can't run a filesystem wipe.
You can add your own rules with approvals.deny, a list of glob patterns that block matching commands before yolo is even checked.
Those defaults are the main reason I'd trust it with an overnight job.

Who Should Use It
- Owners with one clear repeat job: a report, an inbox, a document check.
- Agencies that want several role agents and a shared task board.
- Teams that already live in Slack, Teams or Telegram.
- Anyone who wants the software on their own machine, under an open-source licence.
Who Should Skip It For Now
- Businesses with no one to run a terminal or edit a config file.
- Firms that want customer-facing email replies from day one; the defaults are built to stop that.
- Offices whose paperwork is mostly scanned images, until they plan an OCR step.
Final Verdict: 8.1 Out Of 10
Hermes is a strong small-business agent when you start with one job and grow from there.
Its safety defaults and scheduling earn the top marks; the board, Bot Mode and scanned PDFs keep it short of a 9.

FAQ: Hermes Agent For Business Verdict
What overall score does Hermes get for small business use?
It gets 8.1 out of 10 here, the average of ten use-case scores based on the official documentation.
Which Hermes feature scores highest for a business?
Scheduled reports, skills, access control and unattended safety each score 9, because the defaults are safe and the setup is short.
Why does document reading score lower?
PDF conversion reads only the text layer, so scanned pages come back blank and need a separate OCR or vision step.
Is the Kanban board worth it for a two-person business?
Usually not at first. It suits agencies with several role agents; a small team can rely on cron jobs and delegation.
