Hermes Agent Bedrock support is native, so the verdict on the first question is simple: yes, Hermes runs on Amazon Bedrock models directly, with no LiteLLM, no proxy and no OpenRouter in between.

The official docs name the provider bedrock, and it authenticates with standard AWS credentials instead of an API key.

This page is the reference version, so I go through the integration feature by feature and score each part.

Please read the scores the right way.

I haven't published a hands-on Bedrock test, so these scores rate how complete and clear the integration is on paper.

My sources are the official Hermes AWS Bedrock guide, the Hermes source code in my own install (v0.21.4) and the AWS docs, all read on 12 October 2026.

The Hermes Agent Bedrock Verdict In One Table

Area Score out of 10 Reason for the score
Native support 10 It is a built-in provider with its own setup wizard.
Authentication 9 It uses the full AWS credential chain, so no API key is needed.
Model coverage 9 It reaches Claude, OpenAI, Nova, DeepSeek, Llama and more through three routes.
Guardrails 8 They work on two routes, but AWS doesn't apply them on the Mantle route.
Prompt caching 8 It is automatic, but only for Claude and Nova.
Tool calling 8 Tools are converted for you, but small models are assumed capable.
Ease of setup 6 IAM, model access and an extra install make it slower than one API key.
Diagnostics 8 hermes doctor checks credentials, the library and the API.

Those scores are my reading of the documentation and code, not benchmark results.

The short version is that the integration is thorough and the hard part is AWS itself.

What Hermes Agent Bedrock Is

Hermes Agent is the open-source agent from Nous Research.

Amazon Bedrock is the AWS service that serves models from many makers through one account.

The Hermes Bedrock provider connects the two.

The docs describe three routes under one provider.

Model family Route What you gain
Anthropic Claude The Anthropic SDK's Bedrock client You keep prompt caching, thinking budgets and adaptive thinking.
OpenAI GPT-5.5 and GPT-5.6 The Bedrock Mantle OpenAI Responses endpoint You reach models that are Mantle-only on Bedrock.
Nova, DeepSeek, Llama, GPT-OSS and others The native Converse API You get guardrails, inference profiles and streaming.

The docs say all three share the same credentials and region resolution, with no separate configuration.

Feature 1: Authentication

Hermes uses the boto3 credential chain.

That covers IAM instance roles, access key environment variables, named profiles, SSO and aws configure.

The docs say no environment variable is required if you're already authenticated with the AWS CLI.

The setup wizard offers two methods.

The first is the IAM credential chain, which the wizard marks as recommended.

The second is a Bedrock API Key, which the wizard describes as suitable when an admin distributes keys to a team.

The docs list the order Hermes checks, which starts with AWS_BEARER_TOKEN_BEDROCK and ends with the Lambda execution role.

Verdict: this is the strongest part, because a role-based agent has no long-lived secret to leak.

Feature 2: Region And Cross-Region Inference

The region comes from bedrock.region, then AWS_REGION, then AWS_DEFAULT_REGION, then a default of us-east-1.

Bedrock model IDs use inference profile prefixes.

The docs say us. IDs use cross-region inference profiles for capacity and failover, and global. IDs route across all available regions.

The source code also recognises eu., ap., ca. and other regional prefixes.

It hides models that your region can't route to, which removes a whole class of confusing errors.

Verdict: it is well handled, but the cross-region behaviour is something a compliance team must review.

Feature 3: Model Discovery

Hermes discovers models through the Bedrock control plane.

You can tune that in the config file.

bedrock:
  discovery:
    enabled: true
    provider_filter: ["anthropic", "amazon"]
    refresh_interval: 3600

The provider_filter key limits the picker to the makers you name.

The refresh_interval key sets how long the list is cached, in seconds.

If discovery fails, the wizard falls back to a curated list of models.

Verdict: this is useful for teams that only want approved model makers to appear.

Feature 4: The Models You Can Run

The Hermes docs list these as available, with recommended ones at the top of the picker.

Model ID Route
Claude Sonnet 4.6 us.anthropic.claude-sonnet-4-6 Anthropic SDK
Claude Opus 4.6 us.anthropic.claude-opus-4-6-v1 Anthropic SDK
Claude Haiku 4.5 us.anthropic.claude-haiku-4-5-20251001-v1:0 Anthropic SDK
OpenAI GPT-5.6 Sol openai.gpt-5.6-sol Bedrock Mantle
OpenAI GPT-5.6 Terra openai.gpt-5.6-terra Bedrock Mantle
OpenAI GPT-5.6 Luna openai.gpt-5.6-luna Bedrock Mantle
Amazon Nova Pro us.amazon.nova-pro-v1:0 Converse
Amazon Nova Micro us.amazon.nova-micro-v1:0 Converse
DeepSeek V3.2 deepseek.v3.2 Converse
Llama 4 Scout 17B us.meta.llama4-scout-17b-instruct-v1:0 Converse

Bedrock itself offers more than this.

The AWS models at a glance page listed newer Claude models, Mistral Large 3, Qwen3 models, Kimi K3, Grok 4.7 and GLM 5.3 when I read it on 12 October 2026.

I haven't confirmed that each of those appears in the Hermes picker in every region, so check your own picker.

Verdict: the coverage is wide, and Claude gets the best-supported route.

Feature 5: Guardrails

You attach an Amazon Bedrock Guardrail in the config.

bedrock:
  region: us-east-2
  guardrail:
    guardrail_identifier: "your-guardrail-id"
    guardrail_version: "1"
    stream_processing_mode: "async"
    trace: "disabled"

The docs say the guardrail is attached on the Converse route and on the Claude route.

A blocked request shows up as a content-filter refusal instead of model text.

The stream_processing_mode key only applies to Converse.

The limit is on the AWS side.

The docs say AWS does not apply Guardrails to the Mantle Responses endpoint used by openai.gpt-5.x models.

Verdict: it is a real enterprise feature, as long as you avoid the Mantle models when a guardrail is mandatory.

Feature 6: Prompt Caching

The docs say Hermes applies prompt caching automatically on the Converse path.

It inserts cache markers after the system prompt, the tool definitions and the latest message.

It only does that for Claude and Amazon Nova model IDs.

The docs explain why: sending a cache marker to a model that doesn't support it raises a ValidationException.

Claude normally uses the Anthropic SDK path, which has its own prompt caching.

Verdict: this is good for cost on Claude and Nova, and there is no caching for the other models.

Feature 7: Tool Calling

Tool calling decides whether a model is useful to an agent at all.

Hermes converts its tool definitions into the Converse format automatically.

The source code keeps a short list of models that reject tools.

That list covers DeepSeek R1, Stability image models and embedding models.

Every other model is assumed to support tools.

That assumption is sensible, but it means a weak model will receive tools and may use them poorly.

Verdict: it is solid on Claude, and you should test before trusting smaller models.

Feature 8: Context Windows

Hermes has a static table of context window sizes.

For models missing from the table, the docs say it can probe the real limit by reading Bedrock's length-validation error.

Application inference profile ARNs are sized by calling bedrock:GetInferenceProfile.

Without that permission, the docs say a 128,000-token default applies and a warning names the profile.

You can always set model.context_length by hand.

Verdict: it is more careful than I expected, and it explains one extra IAM permission.

Feature 9: Diagnostics, Switching And The Gateway

The docs say hermes doctor checks AWS credentials, the boto3 install, whether the Bedrock API is reachable and how many models your region offers.

You switch models mid-session with /model and a Bedrock model ID.

Bedrock is listed as a supported fallback provider, so it can sit in a fallback chain.

The docs say Bedrock works with all gateway platforms, including Telegram, Discord and Slack.

Verdict: nothing is missing compared with the other providers.

How To Set Up Hermes Agent Bedrock

This is the short version, and it follows the docs.

  1. You make sure your AWS identity has bedrock:InvokeModel, bedrock:InvokeModelWithResponseStream, bedrock:ListFoundationModels and bedrock:ListInferenceProfiles.
  2. You confirm model access in the Bedrock console, and you submit the one-time use case form if you want Anthropic models.
  3. You sign in with aws configure, SSO or an instance role.
  4. You install the Bedrock extra with the command below.
  5. You run hermes model, choose "More providers..." and then "AWS Bedrock", and pick a region and model.
  6. You run hermes doctor and then hermes chat.
cd ~/.hermes/hermes-agent && python -c "import pm; pm.sync_venv(['bedrock'], explicit=True)"

The resulting config is small.

model:
  default: us.anthropic.claude-sonnet-4-6
  provider: bedrock
  base_url: https://bedrock-runtime.us-east-2.amazonaws.com

bedrock:
  region: us-east-2

The AWS model access docs say many models are now enabled by default, with the Anthropic use case form as the main exception.

Costs: What I Could Verify

Hermes is free and open source, so the cost is the Bedrock usage.

I read the Amazon Bedrock pricing page on 12 October 2026.

Model Lowest regional price I could read, per 1M tokens Note
Mistral Large 3 $0.50 input and $1.50 output Other regions on the page were higher.
DeepSeek v3.2 $0.62 input and $1.85 output Other regions on the page were higher.
Claude models I couldn't read them reliably The prices load dynamically, so check the page.
Amazon Nova models I couldn't read them reliably The prices load dynamically, so check the page.

The page also describes batch inference and service tiers called Standard, Priority, Flex and Reserved.

I won't quote a Claude price that I couldn't see with my own eyes.

Limits And Honest Caveats

  • Bedrock is paid, so there is no free tier of models to experiment with here.
  • Setup takes longer than any single-key provider.
  • Guardrails don't cover the Mantle-served OpenAI models.
  • Prompt caching only covers Claude and Nova.
  • The extra_headers setting isn't used on the Converse route, according to the configuring models docs.
  • Cross-region profiles can process requests outside the region in your config.
  • I haven't published a hands-on test, so real-world speed and reliability are not rated here.

Common Errors And Fixes

Error Fix from the docs
"No API key found" or "No AWS credentials" Run aws configure or attach an IAM role.
"on-demand throughput isn't supported" Use an inference profile ID with a us. or global. prefix.
ThrottlingException Hermes retries with backoff, and you request a quota increase in Service Quotas.
AccessDeniedException Check model access, the Anthropic form and your IAM policy.

Hermes Agent Bedrock Vs The Alternatives

Route Setup Strength Weakness
AWS Bedrock IAM, model access and an extra install AWS billing, IAM, regions and Guardrails It has the most setup work.
Anthropic direct One API key It is the simplest way to get Claude. It only gives you Claude.
OpenRouter One API key It gives many models on one bill. It adds another vendor.
Nous Portal One OAuth login The docs call it the recommended route. It is a separate subscription.
